"When a hipster hears a song on the radio, regardless of whether it is

good or not, hate it immediately."

Nice rationalizing. As one person put this argument quite aptly: "I don't hate mainstream music

because it's mainstream. I hate most mainstream music because most mainstream music happens to be

awful."

You say, before bashing a band, you need to give it a chance, but you're being ridiculously

hypocritical here. You're bashing the reviewer (whom actually happens to like mainstream music

plenty) and then jumping to ignorant conclusions that "You don't like this band? You must be a

hipster!!!" because that is the only thing you can think of as to why someone would dislike this

shit.

"In my opinion, had a band like Neutral Milk Hotel or Beirut written a song like this, and it was

not popular, then you would have loved it, or at least not had a problem with it."

Not sure if you noticed or did the proper 1 minute research but this reviewer loves Coldplay.

That is about as mainstream as it gets before being shit rap or shit pop.

I happen to think that Coldplay, at least in their older albums, happened to produce quality music. My definition of shit

pop is music that:

a: you did not write yourself

b:uses autotune

c:has no real lyrical meaning and is simply aimed at monetary gain

I do not consider Coldplay to fit into any of these categories. And my comments about not liking the band immediately

for simply the sake of being contrary, are actually founded in good reason. The reviewer does not quote lyrics from the

album, and gives what I feel is insufficient evidence as to the fact that the album is bland. EDIT Also, I agree, most

mainstream music is awful, but I happen to know from first hand experience that as soon as Mumford and Sons

evolved from unknown to known began to dislike them. These same people had attested to the musical prowess not

months earlier. I also say after a comma that i have an inclination to do so myself.

What's wrong with autotune? Bon Iver and Kayne West use it and I think they're very good. I don't get why people have a problem with vocal effects but they don't have a problem with guitar effects etc.. I get that people aren't pushed on pitch correction but at the same time; it's only helping an artist get their message across even if they can't sing. Granted, there are those who use it when they shouldn't have to but yeah...

I dont have a problem with you liking Kanye, I happen to like Bon Iver myself, but my problem is not if an artist uses autotune to get their message across, but if they use it to make money by selling crap to people who dont care if they worked meaning into the music at all. May I reference R. Kelly...

“What I'm about to tell you is so damn twisted / not only is a man in the cabinet / but the man is a midget… [echoes] midget… midget…” from his 40 something chapter song "trapped in the closet" that is just plain shit.

I don't like R.Kelly but I love Sam Amidon's version of 'Relief'.

M&S for me just don't have enough in there that shocks me, you know? =/
Like, they're very predictable and they it sounds like a dumb argument but they reuse a lot of the same words and even occasionally metaphors too. There's always something about a valley, heart, love, stone and road.

Its fine if you dont like them. At least you have some actual reasoning. Though, I happen to like the thematic use of

metaphors.

It is reminiscent of shakespeare.

I just think in M&S' context it's a little cliché sounding, personally. It feels like (aside from the direct quotes obviously) that I've heard their songs before, if you get me.

sure, you have your opinions. I can't make you like the album. you may however, find babel slightly more original/poetic.

ex: lovers eyes:

do not ask the price i pay/i must live with my quiet rage/tame the ghosts in my head/they're all wild and wish me

dead/should you shake my ash to the wind/lord forget all of my sins/let me die where i lie/'neath the curse of these

lovers eyes...

tis a thing of beauty...

I listened to it already. I thought the title track was pretty catchy but it was more of the same in most places for me. =/

They're just not my kind of band. I mean, I love folk but they just aren't for me.

I think they're pretty darn good.

I just don't think it's fair to assume all of us here are hating on something because it's popular.

I should perhaps note that I don't like most modern "folk" albums.

Band is decent, never been a fan of groups like Mumford and Sons but the hate they get is a little bit excesive. They're catchy and some of tunes are enjoyable; sadly I've to say they have some flaws, one of them is that they could get predictable; also there are a lot of bands of the same genre which are far better and more consistent.

Band is ok, this album is good. Babel is not that bad but it feels like a recycled album.
