I had a good talk with my friend about authenticity in music and how this band isn't trying to be authentic they're trying to put on a mask, with all the old timey get-ups and sets that obviously look like play sets. It made me rethink my criticisms about the band.
So I gave them another shot with this in mind, because I've changed my views about what authenticity means in music, but then I realized I just really don't like this band and I think they're really terrible song writers. Cool story bro

| | | excellent review
the thing I can't stand is when bands make songs telling me what I should be feeling i.e. radio-friendly easy listening XYZ songs
interesting debate too. people seemed to attack the semantics rather than the core of the argument for some reason (as in, did others think these songs sounded more genuine than the review portrayed? etc.)

hipsters dont like this band cause they dug them for a little bit then they got too popular.
Yeah let's get real here.
| | | Hey I still like Arcade Fire
| | | "I much prefer Fleet Foxes."
Yeah that's probably a better comparison

Horrible review, he doesn't actually critique the band at all, just their success.
Now I must have listened to it wrong, but I liked what I heard. To me, that's all that matters.

Good cover, though.

"Here, the pre-determined soundscape is one of 'earthy' guitar and banjo, decidedly introspective vocals and words whose ambiguity hide the fact that they can't even possibly mean half as much as they seem to."
Know I am late to the party, but this sentence was a bit frustrating to me. Plenty of lyrics are ambiguous and praised for holding so much meaning. While I agree they can be ambiguous to the point of obscuring the message, I really think they can come close to as much as they pretend to. Though pretentious, the songs are still uplifting, and a nice shift from whatever garbage I normally have to listen to around friends anyway. I just think you let your personal hatred of the album get in the way of the review slightly. Well written, though.

I am also confident that after reading this review and hearing them again, I will probably grow to hate the band too. Especially when I am just thinking of these things the entire time I am hearing the song...

This is just an amazing review. One of the best ever.
| | | i don't really understand the point of this review. a presumption per minute and nothing to back them up.

You could say it is a bit irrational...
| | | Bon Iver is still good when mainstream though.

If you're going to bash an album like this... you need some more sound reasoning for why it is an abomination. It appears to me that you any many thread posters simply hate the band because it got it self onto radio. While my local radio station playing Little Lion Man and The Cave 7 times per hour did give me a slight urge to dash my brains out on my dashboard, it didn't give me cause to hate the artists themselves. When a hipster hears a song on the radio, regardless of whether it is good or not, hate it immediately, and I admit to usually having the same inclination. But if you actually listen to the album, you realize that the songs do not all sound the same, at all. Its just the banjo riff that is a common theme. When arguing that they followed a formula, you did not once reference the actual lyrics or composition. In my opinion, had a band like Neutral Milk Hotel or Beirut written a song like this, and it was not popular, then you would have loved it, or at least not had a problem with it. If you listen to the lyrics, they are poetic. They have references to great literature, prevalently Shakespeare and Steinbeck, as well as a deeply personal theme. While you may love being the martyr and contrarian, it doesn't mean you have to call the album shallow simply because it made it onto radio. Also, making a declaration that a group that writes, records, produces, etc. for their whole album is a manifestation of satan more-so than KATY PERRY, is blasphemy in it of itself. Quick note, after having listened to the album many times, I do not recall meaningful or inspirational actually being in any songs. If someone now would like to state that I have bought into mainstream shite-on-vinyl go ahead. I listen to quality music produced by talented artists. My favorite is Beirut, along with M&Sons, Neutral Milk, One Eskimo, and the Decemberists. I listen to this music and judge whether I like it not based on whether I am one of 10 people who knows about it, but whether it is quality music, and if you judge music to go with or against the crowd and for that reason only, then you're just full of shit.
| | | I don't think anyone hates them because they're popular...
But I'd be lying if I didn't think that some people dislike them because of what their popularity perceives.
I personally don't like them. They're just a bit bland.

I've seen this so many times before. It's really pathetic.

Why? I'm giving a logical argument for why I think the album is being judged for less than it is worth.
