I remember listening to a few tracks off of their old melodic death metal albums and not really feeling them compared to their newer style. I really love Soundtrack To Your Escape and Come Clarity, they are both great albums despite all the hate they get here.

Good review. Not a good band, probably will avoid this for now.

Overall, for me, I think the whole album is going to suck like the previous one.
If you didn't like the first two tracks then you might as well not waste your time.

Hmm.. good review, although I do disagree with you one some points, like Anders Fridén's vocals, I think they are quite amazing, but maybe that's just me... And the synth part, I think the synths were quite amazing on Soundtrack (not so much Reroute though), although they we're kinda all over the place at times, a bit too much.

Imo this is probably the finest work In Flames has done since Clayman. The only thing that really bugged me about this album was the drumming, anyone else felt they were, wierd, simple and quite predicteble compared to the druming on hmm... Come Clarity?
Yeah, his vocals are definitely going to be an acquired taste. You said you disagreed about the synth thing and then went on to prove my point ;) The drumming was alright. What was he really supposed to do with this music?

Yeah, their newer stuff definitely has more mass appeal than their death stuff. I like "The Quiet Place" but otherwise feel that Soundtrack is one of their weaker albums. Come Clarity is good, though.

Is no-one else hearing the significant djent influences? And yeah, Bjorn, it turns out, is more creative and enerjized than Jesper has been for years.

It was Sundin (Dt guitarist) i think who contributed lyrics to the Jester Race, mostly collaborating with Friden and helping translate his ideas, I could be wrong though. I'll have to check this out as didn’t mind their last effort but agree that Anders voice has got progressively weaker, he was much more effective as a straight up dm vocalist.

I ment that Soundtrack to Your Escape featured some pretty decent synth, but they were sometimes a bit of a mess, and meybe too much. And the drumming, hell I don't know... something else, this is the first album he dissapoints me really.

The reason his vocals are so weak now is probably directly related to those old death metal growls.

That is a fair point! His sung vocals are still pretty cringe worthy though sometimes, probably not helped by some dubious lyrics on the last few albums. Chorus in Alias for example.

Great review and the rating is spot on. Wasn't really expecting much, but was pleasantly surprised. Still, Anders drags down this album with his lyrics and vocals. Well, at least there isn't any lines that rival "I feel like shit, but at least I feel something" in silliness.

And correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Jesper stepped down as the bands chief songwriter after Clayman and since then Bjorn has handled these duties, with Jesper more or less contributing. No?

Gossow and Friden should form a 2 part vocal harmony group.....possible alternative to the death penalty.

Great review.

As a (general) fan of their newer stuff, you've convinced that this will be at least worth my time / money. Shame about Anders though, this sounds like it could've been great.

Fridén's vocals were actually great in the 90's, so far this might be a slight step up from Sense of Purpose.

Musically speaking this is definitely a step up from Sense of Purpose

This album is pretty fresh, if only Anders tried a bit harder... The guitar work is outstanding. Daniel has fallen behind on this one though.

Psychopathologist, I've seen your comments all over Sputnik, and I've started to wonder. Are you anything more than a mere troll who enjoys just degrading all music he doesn't seem to be fond of and through that channels his frustrations?
