Well what would you call it? It is electronic music

So calling it electronic music is ok, but calling it electronica not? (Getting a bit confused here...)

People seem to think that electronica is a genre - it isn't. It's a term that means electronic music. Like if someone was to say "Daft Punk made a great house/electronica album". These aren't different things, there's no need to differentiate. Saying "I listen to electronica" is fine, because you listen to electronic music. But what annoys me is when people write reviews and say "this is a great electronica track" or something like that. Pretty much it boils down to the fact that only a few people on this site know how to use the word correctly
|
| |
For me it fits right alongside IDM (intelligent dance music) in how it is misused here and in general.

Agree wholeheartedly. Except I include that kinda misuse with the same people who feel compelled to dream up obnoxious tags when they hear something a little leftfield like post dubstep, fidget house, future garage, witch house etc etc

Well Dev I think you just answered your own question.
This is why I am not very fond of terms like 'electronica'.

Check. But as a counter point, I think the term can be used as an overarching 'genre label', when describing artists such as Tobin, of who you can't say they make breakcore, fusion jazz, IDM or whatever.

Which is exactly what I said in my post that you quoted. And I can quite easily say that Amon Tobin started out fusing drum & bass with breaks before moving into more trip hop territory

Okay, but you said that you weren't fond of electronic music as a term

Hmm, let me rephrase: I think you can say with some artists: "Hey this is a great electronica track", as a 'genre label', because you can't fit it in a particular 'sub-genre'.
It's a bit like saying: there are some great guitar tracks on the new Arctic Monkeys album, when you can maybe also say there are some good indie tracks on it. (okay, maybe not the best example, but I think it's clear)

But the problem with using electronica at all (in place in electronic music) is that it is such a
loaded term due to it being completely misused (or made up) in the 90s to describe electronic songs
that became big in the mainstream.
To show how they misused the term, imagine if some record label started promoting their new 'indy'
artists and grouped Nick Drake and Phil Collins under this label. The two have so little in common.
But essentially it is just a buzzword to introduce some degree of commonality between the two and
try and promote these artists in place of a far clearer and more valid description that the two
artists fall under - singer songwriters.
So electronica just describes electronic music, but is a buzzword that does no good in expanding on
the term electronic music, and comes loaded with the fact that people don't really understand its
meaning and those who originally put it forth tried to make it out as something it wasn't.
"Hey this is a great electronica track", as a 'genre label', because you can't fit it in a
particular 'sub-genre'.
More accurate to say "hey this is a great track, it has elements of ____ and _____ in it."

@Deviant: "Only if one of us let it"
Yes it will ;)
@Baseline000: do you just not like it because it lacks a bass-line?
I honestly don't see how someone who's into electronica *ducks from whatever Deviant throws at me for using the term* can't appreciate the album. If I tell you that it has a lot of similarities to Noisia will that help?
As far as all this electronica debate goes, to me it's always just been used to describe the kind of electronic music that doesn't really fall under any other label. The kind that verges on IDM *ducks again* but you're not sure.

Well some people tried to label anything that was identified as IDM "electronica" because they felt the term was insulting. In fact Aphex Twin is against the whole idm term. I never found it insulting because it's a term that never perpetuated itself to be above others
I honestly don't see how someone who's into electronica *ducks from whatever Deviant throws at me for using the term* can't appreciate the album.
I'm not quite sure where you're going with this. This discussion as to the credibility of the word electronica has no bearing on how we receive or should receive this or any electronic album

Oh and for anyone that wants to argue electronic music genres, a great guide is found at
http://techno.org/electronic-music-guide/
It is pretty comprehensive and if you think something is some subgenre like witch house, but can't find
it on there - then the subgenre probably doesn't exist! Only thing is it doesn't get into dubstep.
p.s for anyone visiting the guide, your first stop should be house --> French House

"I'm not quite sure where you're going with this. This discussion as to the credibility of the word electronica has no bearing on how we receive or should receive this or any electronic album"
The stuff between the asterisks, that was a joke. The other stuff was part of a veiled insult (well, "insult" is a bit strong), hinting at the fact that a lot of people on this site (and everywhere else but it's more pronounced on this site) tend to only like stuff that people tell them to like. So when a unique album such as this comes along they don't get it and won't put effort into liking it.
The way I see it, most electronic music draws on the same kind of aspects in order to sound "good". In the end there isn't too much of a difference between someone like Tobin and the more dance-orientated stuff. Think of Deadmau5 as a nice transition, so someone who likes one kind shouldn't find it too hard to find something they like in another kind.
I'm going to need to know my genres a bit better to make this more intelligible, so Liberi Fatali's link is pretty timely. So thanks for that.

God knows I don't understand dubstep, I just know whether I like it or not when people go "hey listen
to this dubstep" and I actually bother checking it out.

The problem with trying to explain dubstep to a new-comer is just that there's so many strains that have emerged in the last 2 years alone. That plus having to break the news to people that not all dubstep is simply brostep wobble
