THis has been growing on me the last few days. I absolutley love the lead guitar in slow, slow tune. not sure if i'm ready to bump it to a 4 yet but I'm at least considering it now.

Ok Rudy... I can completely understand your perspective and I think your comments about certain tracks are valid. But I
think your score of 2.5 is pretty harsh. The average here on Sputnik is 3.5, so you are hitting it way low.
My morning Jacket is a band that explores many styles of music in the songs they write. Your review seems to come
from a perspective that only appreciates certain styles that they explore. I agree that "Victory Dance" and "Circuital" are
an awesome representation of a certain sound and style they like to rock.... and they were instantly my favorite tracks
on the album. And yes, the rest of the album is different, and it presents a challenge after they take you where the last
two tracks have taken you... but all good bands will challenge you...and you have to respect the bands desire to explore
some different areas of sound and rhythm. Jim James is a big fan of Buddy Holly, old school folk, and many other music
Genres. He enjoys singing and playing in different Genres. "Outta My System" is kind of like his tribute to Weezer or
Buddy Holly or whoever. It's like his "Off The Record" of this album. If you remember on "Z"... "Off the Record" was a
much different style than say "Gideon" or "Wordless Chorus".
I thought like you when I first heard this album. I was ready to hate it. But I've noticed over the years that I often hate
albums after first listen and then they grow on me and I end up loving them. When Radiohead came out with "King of
Limbs", I was like WTF is this?! And then it grew on me and I now think its some of they're best shit.
I have also seen MMJ twice in the last month. And they performed many of these songs live and I have to say they all
rock on stage!!
I have grown to like this entire album. I don't think it's the best thing MMJ has ever done, but I think it is great music
from a great band. "Z' got about a 4 score here on Sputnik,... I think a 3.5 is accurate for this Album. 2.5 seems harsh
to me but you have a right to your opinion.

review doesn't have to correlate with the average rating. i can understand where you're coming from, and i like experimental MMJ (off the record is one of my favorite songs off Z). however, 'outta my system' sucks imo comparatively. i just don't think the quality of the songs overall matches up to the band's earlier work, regardless of the genre.

I don't understand what's going on with some of the reviews on sputnik. It seems like the replies match some of the similar sentiments so maybe it's a problem with my recognition of good music but I feel this deserves better then a 2.5. I haven't listened to it enough but it sounds very original and has a nice groove to it... I flipped to Black Metal immediately when I heard the "sore thumb" remark and I guess I'm just not hearing the problem. I'm digging this. I'm not the best to determine what the rating should be on something but if I was being conservative, I would give this album a 3.5. My personal opinion is probably a 4 but I need to spin it a few more times and maybe it will sink... or gain. Not sure yet. I had a feel of Flaming Lips and Band of Horses with this but I'm not sure why. Maybe some influences are within but I don't think it's a good comparison.
I'm not great on comparisons and I'm not great on ratings but a 2.5 seems a little undeserving. I think I need to stop looking at ratings on sputnik as I'm getting this vibe a lot lately. Feels a bit snobbish to me but maybe your ears are more tuned for what is good and what isn't than mine. To each his own right?

Subjective Track breakdown
1. Trippy cool
2. upbeat pleasant
3. slow slightly boring
4. beautiful...
5. nice but nothing special
6. 100% intersting, but not sure if I like it.
7. Fuzzy Pop. cool moments, but overall mediocre.
8. disjointed. I can see it playing during the end credits of a romantic comedy.
9. Elvis meets Indie Rock.
10. slow dance heaven.

I loved this record. I am a big fan, but i thought this was a good mix of early At Dawn and It Still Moves, mmj, and the more experimental side of the band. Great singing and playing, another wonderful album from these guys.
