"This is true. However, I'm not convinced they came even close to attempting their best with this. Guys like Anders and Tomas were still responsible for writing stuff like Windows and The Architects without needing Svensson as support. Those songs dwarf anything on this album so they obviously could do better."
I didn't know this. Windows might actually be my favorite At the Gates song. If not my favorite at least in the top 3.
I'm in the camp that prefers the first two albums and Garden of Grief BY FAR. This was one of the earliest extreme metal albums I bought and even back then when I was a pretty big melodeath fan I wasn't crazy about this album. My interest in it has went down significantly since then. I also had no idea they lost a key songwriter in this era either until reading this thread, which explains a lot.

I don't think a lot of people really recognize what a pivotal role Svensson played so it's worth discussing.

giving another spin to this one today and yeah its just not my style. i cant even really get into melodeth sacrilege too much cause they remind me a lot of this particular era

that being said im still down with in flames and dark tranquillity as far as "normie" dm stuff

this is actually clicking for me lately more than it ever has in the past. i was doing a discog run for these guys and realized i actually really like all their stuff more than i remember, but there was someting about listening to them chronically and it all leading to this album made it hit different

this album is so incredibly consistent its hard to pick a favorite, guess Blinded by Fear would be my pick simply because the industrial opening is so iconic
