Also, I note that you rated the album a 5 - despite admitting that it was closer to a 3.5 and that it definitely had a few weak tracks. Why is this?

Okay. I've given the album a second chance (more like a sixth, really). It - at best - is a 2.5, and I am ridiculously certain about this. Frankly, I would even have been quite comfortable with sustaining my original opinion of doling out a 2.0. Immediacy and memorability are definitely not things this album has going for it, which is rather strange for a pop album.
Other thoughts: "Cut Straight To The Heart" is not an excellent closer by any means, and "Under Your Touch" and "Make A Scene" are disappointing. Some songs like "Synchronised" and "Bittersweet" have even lost a bit of their charm.

Yeah. And I actually went and humoured them lol. I think it's karma for my being such a dick on other users' reviews =p
I did learn a lot out of this experience though. It's really only going to make me a much better reviewer.

Dick?, on other's reviews? Surely not Irving lol.

LOL I've been a bit of a dick to you man. It's a wonder you don't hate me - especially after all the ripping I've done on your work. Glad to see you're taking it all in stride though =)

I'm not like that man. Especially when your adding helpful pointers that help me. Maybe one day though you might be able to read my reviews without critically analysising them.

Irving, first of all, thanks for responding to my comments.
Why did I rate the album a 5? I said i would rate it anything higher than 3.5 if I were you. Why i said this is because i have read your reviews about pop music, and they don't all seem to be as positive as some other reviews out there. I assumed that you didn't have an ear for pop music, and for a casual listener, this album would definitely fall under the 3.5 category.
I agree with what you said about how musicians should make music that would rope in others who aren't naturally inclined to the genre. Sophie isn't a very genre specific artist. Or so i feel. I have been a fan of her music since 2000 when i heard Groovejet on the radio for the very first time. You could brand her music "pop" because she doesn't really fit in anywhere. Let me explain it this way... you hold her 3rd album very highly, so you would have noticed how she tries to cram in a lot of sounds into her album and tries to create a flow between all these sounds. On Trip, there is everything, right from electro, dance, indie, 70’s disco... If you have listened to all her albums, you would know that she isn’t very genre specific. (continued)

Trip The Lights Fantastic is undoubtedly her most instant album, but i personally don't think that is the best direction for Sophie to go ahead in. Commercial pop music is fun and instant, but it has no longevity. How many Britney/Katy/Rihanna/JLo songs do you actually play when they're done with the album? But that isn't a problem with the genre or the artists; it’s what the public want. And you, like the majority, are looking for immediacy in pop music. Your opinion is valid, and i won’t counter it. If you are earnest though, listen to albums that are less immediate. They are the albums which have a soul, in the sense, they actually feel more personal. What i like about Sophie is that she doesn’t believe a dance song has to be about one getting physical with another in a club, or fantasising one’s body etc., An artist can incorporate so many emotions into his/her song, but you rarely find any of that on a commercial album. Ke$ha, Britney, Katy and all the other pop princesses fighting it out on the charts sing about sex, and more sex, and dancing to a song about sex. Don’t get me wrong, i like their music for its immediacy, but i don’t really go back to any of them when there’s a new album out. It doesn’t work that way with a Bextor album though, cos i still play all her other albums as much as i play Make A Scene.
I personally believe that if a song takes a little while to grow on you, then that is the song that you’ll find yourself listening to all the time. And this has always happened with me. But my theory does not necessarily have to hold good for you.
I will sum up saying that this album is an improvement, for me, over Trip The Light Fantastic, in terms of sound, emotion and lyrics. And Sophie sounds wonderful as ever.

I'm sure if you wanted too, you could probably create a review on your ideas.

And I read your profile, and I could see your musical tastes, I realize you're not the most appropriate to evaluate an album of this genre. Maybe it's your personal opinion, but I think your lack of discretion does not allow you to appreciate each piece on the disc as it should.
"Make a Scene" is an album with its own character, not based on issues out of tune and unpleasant. The sounds are well designed and each piece is set to tell a story through the album.
Maybe she failed with the amount of tracks on the disc or the inclusion of "Off & On. "
