"Awkwardly pretentious review, but the album sounds interesting."



Could you elaborate? I feel like "pretentious" is a word that gets thrown around irresponsibly (read: way too often), and people never seem to explain what they really mean by it.

pretentious has become the worst word ever, in other words

kiran recently got labelled pretentious in a review, he's taken it hard

Review is pretty awesome, I checked out some of this and it's really odd stuff. Definitely not something that I'd be able to understand, let alone enjoy, without multiple listens.

save it not being written at a 4th grade reading level which is the usual meter-o-pretension around these parts.

there is literally nothing about this review that makes it seem like the reviewer is full of himself

Garages. Deserted parking lots. The abandoned house down the road. That imaginary space in the back of your head inhabited by unnameable fears manifested in hideous physical forms, forms that have a tendency to appear out of nowhere, only to dissipate into thin air.

You can say that my choice of words is questionable, but that doesn't equate pretentiousness; I'm not trying to display "intelligence" so much as trying to adequately compare this album to something, anything, that makes it a bit more immediately comprehensible. And since a review is generally written in order to (a) convey opinions to a reader and (b) hopefully entice or convince readers to check the music out, I don't think this is a particularly unusual, let alone "pretentious", way to go about writing.
