it's not a question of the derivation per se, rather how it's pulled off. I personally can appreciate ripping off if it's done tastefully, sometimes almost in a coy or insidious way. I can't help but feel that this band sort of fetishizes their influences, sort of makes it more about the bands they're imitating then their actual execution of the imitating or performance.

I understand that, sometimes a band can sound forced, like Mumford & Sons and it's distractingly derivative. At some point you have to find your own voice in the influences, I think Braids do, to a certain extent, but I mean it's certainly not an earth shattering record in my books. Probs a 3.5
