"The group rehearsed Van Vliet's difficult compositions for eight months, living communally in a small rented house in the Woodland Hills suburb of Los Angeles. Van Vliet implemented his vision by asserting complete artistic and emotional domination of his musicians. At various times one or another of the group members was put "in the barrel", with Van Vliet berating him continually, sometimes for days, until the musician collapsed in tears or in total submission to Van Vliet.[4] According to John French and Bill Harkleroad these sessions often included physical violence. I recently attended a talk/concert by Gary Lucas, one of the guitarists in the last Magic Band line-up. Was great to hear all these stories, see the paintings and so on. Even played rare spoken word tapes and unheard b-sides/outtakes from the Ice Cream For Crow sessions. I think his show is always on the road in some form so any fans might want to check it out.

Maybe its because Im faded, love Zappa, and been listening to too much jazz/delta blues/weird music lately but this was pretty damn cool to me. You just have to have an open mind to it I guess.

Honestly it didnt even seem that weird. Its very free jazzy so if you havent listened to any free jazz it might just seem all over the place, but its not. There are a good amount of melodies here within the madness.
Potato some of the music you listen to is much more out there than this, so just need to listen to it again. The album obviously had an effect on you, good or bad, since you been trashing it for 7 pages. Give it another shot. Maybe spark up beforehand. You cant form an opinion on an album like this after just 1 listen, even if you hated it. You know that. I actually think this is rather accessible considering what I was expecting. But its a love it or hate it album. Either way it hasnt stood up as a classic for nothin.

I like the Beefheart song Her Eyes Are a Million Blue Millions. Tropical Hotdog Night might be the best song name ever.

ugh dude, no.
I would back up that point. The rhythmic style of this album owes a bit to free jazz, especially the large group stuff and the feel of Albert Ayler's trio. It's like every player has their own groove that doesn't really make total sense with those around it, but the whole thing lurches forward in its own polyrhythmic way.

Yeah but it's really a certain type of free jazz that I think you can draw similarities with (in a purely rhythmic sense). Anyway, each to their own. Always found it funny that the people that love this are not necessarily hyperbolic about it, but the people who hate it, man they fucking hate it.
This album is pretty much the cerebral palsy inflicted cousin of his debut, Safe As Milk, so if anybody is struggling or thinks all Beefheart is fucked, then check that out.
