Giving this a first listen now. "Calamity Song" is awesome; I was thinking that it should be the third single, but then I remembered that since the second (TIWWF) was released two Januarys ago...
(FWIW, I heard "Down by the Water" on the radio when I was eating at Sonic a few weeks ago)
"Rox in the Box" is good too, but WTF were they thinking with that song title?

"Yeah I don't think this was really noteworthy at all. Kind of a forgettable album imo"
whoa gotta listen to this again
I liked one of their older tracks a lot but I don't remember which

Album is super underrated.

I miss when the Decemberists were more exciting. This isn't bad but 2 or 3 albums prior they were really out on a limb.

Listening to January Hymn while shoveling snow is just perfect ~
Criminally underrated album.

There's a sheer feeling of summery nostalgia surrounding this.
I used to snob this record - and I still do prefer their more excentric and ambitious stuff - but I've become more obsessed with it recently than I've ever been with a specific album

The nostalgia factor is what elevates this above the rest of their material for me. They've made more interesting albums but none of them resonate with me quite as much as this.
Not to degrade the rest of their material, I adore almost everything else they've done too!

The songwriting is impeccable on this one, it's just a bit short on intrigue.

I get why many die hard Decemberists fans don't enjoy this as much but to my ears this is a stone-cold classic.

one consistent jam after another, but where's the whimsy?
this album is almost too grounded, if that is even possible

This album gets a lot of hate, but it really hits the spot this time of year.
