do you feel that way about all sampling(like its use in hip hop) or is it the specific collage form that bothers you?

"this part of what he said isn't retarded. the analogies hold... mosaics and montages aren't typically reviewed alongside paintings and films..."

I would venture that collages/mosaics and montages, when done effectively, are held up in the same light as "original" works.. I can't remember the name anymore but a couple of years ago there was a film making the rounds that was entirely composed of shots from other films, with the intent, of course, of creating something entirely new. It was well-received, but more importantly, it was judged by its own merits.

no definitely not; i love rap and burial and parodies and remixes. I love them mainly because they transform the character of the original work into a secondary work. it's (usually) progress.

what I don't care for is the gratuitous, excessive butchering of songs, stripping them down and stringing them together to capitalize on their (the original artist's) recognition, and then claiming it's profound or music or profound music.

Don't you think that artists like Burial are essentially deconstructing their samples, though? Or are you objecting

more to the innate obviousness of Girl Talk's sampling style?

no man, look at what I wrote again... the 'deconstruction' of songs isn't the problem at all. Its the volume of content being deconstructed that I have a problem with.

Think about it like this: when you hear a sample on a Burial album, you're hearing the secondary artist's painstaking study of the original work--the sample is re-worked for the new song. It is a deliberate process that builds on earlier deliberate processes. It's like re-drafting the music.

On girl talk you have none of this...

Ahhhh I see exactly what you mean, and I agree.. Girl Talk is much more about saying "HERE THIS IS A SAMPLE FROM THIS SONG AND I AM GOING TO MIX IT WITH THIS SAMPLE FROM ANOTHER SONG" rather than actually creating something interesting/new from the samples. In other words, it is no more (it might be even less) than the sum of its parts..

from that perspective one could definitely find it shallow, but i could never see myself hating it.

I don't know how you guys can say he isn't creating something new, because in reality he is. It's more than just putting samples A, B, and C together and that's it. He has to use some musical theory to find and use samples that will fit together not only based the samples key but also the samples time signature ect. I think he is a very talented musician, not because of his own musical talent but because of his talent to sonically place the samples in such an interesting and successful way.

nobody said this (at least i don't think anybody did).

It's more than just putting samples A, B, and C together and that's it.

more like a, b, c, d, e, f, . . . aa, bb, cc, dd...

He has to use some musical theory to find and use samples that will fit together not only based the samples key but also the samples time signature ect.

some musical theroy. not much though. and using musical theory doesn't necessarily make you a musician. Poets, propagandists, comics, spoken-word artists, advertisers, and politicians all have been known to use "some musical theory."

I think he is a very talented musician, not because of his own musical talent

you make this too easy.

but because of his talent to sonically place the samples in such an interesting and successful way.

yeah so basically he's an editor. maybe he's a good editor. that's just as culturally valuable as the actual musicians whose songs he rips up and (partially) distributes, all without their consent.

obviously some people are going to think he's a genius and some are going to think he's just randomly cutting up songs without talent. i think he's somewhere in the middle but i really think that arguing about his merits like this is fruitless.

while I pretty clearly skew towards the latter, this isn't some diatribe. If you look back (and I can't fault you for not looking back), I'm only responding to others' questions...
