Extremely unpopular opinion time: I think Win became a better singer after Funeral.

Nah that scans, he sounds a lot more confident on Neon Bible and Suburbs even though his vocals still complement the music here extremely well imo

is it really unpopular though?

I thought so just because Funeral is considered their best album, but I guess not. And here I was thinking I was saying something so controversial yet so brave.

i'm sure there's tons of people preferring win's singing on this one compared to their later stuff too but i feel like his singing is not on top of the list of things separating this as their clear-cut best album

If someone told me they listened to Arcade Fire for the great vocals I'd probably give them a funny look. Win's voice is a weird, lumpy instrument the band has always had to work around (it's also a big reason why they suck so hard at doing sleek disco pastiches)

Well, Regine is much worse than Win Butler. She's simply terrible.

Then I'll dig a tunnel

From my window to yours

Yeah, a tunnel from my window to yours

You climb out of the chimney

And meet me in the middle

The middle of the town

And since there's no one else around

We let our hair grow long and forget all we used to know

Then our skin gets thicker from living out in the snow

...

But sometimes we remember our bedrooms

And our parent's bedrooms

And the bedrooms of our friends

Then we think of our parents

Well what ever happened to them?

“Funeral” is the sort of perfectly-realised record you’d hope from a band at the top of their game. For a debut release it’s unmatched in recent years. Hearing it is to wake from a black and white slumber and to view the world in widescreen Technicolour.
