Review Summary: Awesome album, awesome band. I just covered the main standout songs of this album, all the songs that remained non-mentioned are also great, but not nearly of the same par as the standouts... Go get this album, it's only 10 bucks on Amazon.
Honestly, I bought this album on a whim. I was sitting on Pandora, listening to some music. I had typed in This Will Destroy You, and was listening to music similar to it... You know how Pandora goes. I went through some average, mundane post-rock songs... Sounded like the same stuff I'd heard over and over again. But then, Instrumental by A Burning Water came on. The track immediately caught me off guard, starting out with clean, resonating acoustic guitars, then melting into a heavier feel. A few trumpets came into the picture, and made the song absolutely incredible. It is still among my favorites today...
So, I went onto Amazon.com and found, to my surprise, that I had 20 dollars in my account. I bought "We Can See The Sky From Here" right away, no hesitation.
One of the best purchases I've made.
What sets this band apart from most bands of this Alternative/emo/hardcore genre, is the creativity of their songs, and the diversity. There are songs on the album, such as This Is a Test that sounds pretty generic. But then there are songs on this album that are incredible, such as A Passing Wish. You'd expect it to have some sort of heavy screaming in it, or a climax area. But, instead, it sticks to an amazing, steady, beat. The vocals in this song stand out a huge amount. They remain clean throughout the entirety of the song, and sound incredible through and through. A Passing Wish is among the best songs on the album.
Then, there's These Ruins, which does have screaming in it, but it's not overdone, it actually is refreshing to hear, instead of annoying. Then, there are clean vocals.
Instrumental, which I mentioned earlier, comes right before the closer of the album. I'll say it again, it is a fantastic song.
Then, the closer comes along, Patience Is Me. It is an excellent ending to an excellent album. It starts out slow, and builds, and builds, and builds, until the end hits. I'd say, the ending is almost reminiscent of the ending to Good Morning Captain, by Slint. However, the ending to this song is more layered, and longer lived than Good Morning Captain. Of course, Good Morning Captain outdoes this song by a great deal, however, I do think Patience Is Me has a similar feel.
Sadly, since this release, the band hasn't said anything about their whereabouts, or if they're working on a new album... Basically, it's been about 4 or so years since anything about this band has been announced... I'm assuming they are no more. But, I really hope they're still around, I'd love to get my hands on another album by them and see how they could possibly top “We Can See The Sky From Here.”
