Interesting, I went to do a Sound Off on this and was told "Maybe you should write a full review." I don't want to. ;) I will say this: It's a 'good' album, the production sucks like anything Kevin Shirley does, Nicko needs to give his hi-hat a rest, and the band needs to play down a couple semitones so Bruce doesn't have a vocal hernia. Not their best post-Blayze effort. I love Maiden - some of the greatest songs ever in metal history, great live, I've had beers with a few of them and they are great guys - but I can't give this more than a 3. IMHO, which is just an opinion, BNW is still their best effort since bringing Bruce back.

Really? I thought the production was fine on this album. Can you give examples of where it's noticably lacking?

- to my ears, anyhow, it just has the usual Kevin Shirley dullness to it. Flat and blunt on the top end, a bit thick on the bottom. Vocals seem to drift in and out sometimes. I'm just not a fan of his style, which seems to be very 'live', or 'off the floor'. I don't think he really brings anything to the table as far as making a recording stand out. I prefer a little more presence and clarity in my mixes, that's all.

agreed. the "liveness" effect that they've been doing for the past 3 albums, really gives you that live concert feel to it.

"It wierd because the album length did not effect me as much as i thought it would."

Agrred. It doesn't really feel as long as it is. Agreed with the production though, Brave New World and DoD sound fantastic but this just seems lacking...

Brave New World pretty much sets the benchmark w.r.t. production.

I wonder what this would've sounded like if they had followed the same template.

I'm loving the album. Is it their greatest? No. But it is certainly another standout Maiden album with some great songs. Starblind is so awesome that I'd put it up in their top 10 songs of all time. Maiden have certainly evolved from the 80s with their more epic-like songs, but as far as I'm concerned, they're still making quality music that is worthwhile to listen to.

Why do BNW and DoD sound so good? Well they were produced with artificially maxed-out levels so naturally they do sound better. AMOLAD and The Final Frontier sound more natural and if you want them as loud as BNW and DoD, then just turn up your volume.

9 listens later and I've decided to settle on a rating. It's absolutely stellar Maiden from track 3 onwards and "The Talisman" is definitely one of the best songs the band has put out since their reunion.

Second behind Brave New World for me.

Meh, still haven't gotten this yet, I was so let down by 'Satellite' and 'El Dorado' that the hype was just sucked out of me. I'm sure I'll get around to it though.

The pre-released tracks sucked the hype out of me too initially but going into this with shoddy expectations seemed to make it more enjoyable. I like it more than AMOLAD I think. The last two tracks are especially good.

Dance of Death had great production imo. But I'm biased towards it because it was my first Maiden album.
