I think his last consistent one was AFP actually

April is possibly better than this then the next two had some quality material (Among the Leaves t/t is incredible), some of the side projects have good moments too, then the new stuff is arguably more interesting than this period as he's gone RHP level ultra confessional. He's still a great song writer - Gustavo, You Missed My Heart, Micheline...I won't hear a bad word against but I get some will jump ship if what they enjoyed has left his current muse.
I'll always see a bit of a 'Dylan plugged in his guitar harrrumph' in that reaction though

among the leaves t/t very good but that album is horrible imo

It's one of his weakest but I'm surprised anyone who listens to a lot of Kozelek could have such a strong reaction to it

i just think hes a lazy songwriter now, and his lyrical quality has dipped dramatically for the most part

yes seconded that admiral fell promises is very very good. I think he really dipped after that
probably his best guitar playing on that one out of all his stuff

Admiral is great but when Mark said in an interview he didnt want to carry on recording that type of album over and over again I got it - I wouldn't have wanted to listen to that sort of material again and again. Pleased he went off on a load of curve balls

I wasn't challenging just relaying and trying to defend the direction he took (which you said you've grown to like)
I love the new stuff, it's like story books with incredibly evocative musical backing that end up becoming inherited memories. I think Benji is close to absolute genius, how fans can't be moved by Micheline or Gustavo or Jim Wise... :/

People throwing accusations of laziness at him for that album beggars belief as far as I'm concerned
I enjoy that his musical career so far can be loosely split into three very different style periods, all equally impressive

i understand what he did on benji too
i understand that the songs stinkkk

Benji is still weird for me but I don't hate it, it's really just like this loose storytelling thing he's doing, at times though the music and the lyrics join up in a way that really does point to genius, Carissa does that through pretty much the whole song.

I like this the most for a more active listening experience. But April is my go to in times of zone out intoxication.
