decent review

MJ: yes, thank you very much : ). I was well-aware our ratings for this are because of different reasons, but I'm fine with that, as I'm happy you are too
everyone else: thanks guys, I agree, long overdue
where's all the people that love this? I'm not complaining haha, I was just expecting a backlash
and kinda surprised one aspect of the review hasn't been pointed out yet haha, it probably will eventually

I love this album, but this is well-rwritten as usual.

I agree with your point about this being the fore-runner of the obviously declining post-hardcore genre (every scene kid in my school is set on Attack Attack! being among the best post-hardcore bands) but despite the rest of the "genres" general shittiness, I do enjoy parts of this. Curbside Goodbye is a damn fantastic song, really damn fantastic.

"to even worse effects", second to last paragraph, only thing I saw though.
I'm not too fond of the beginning of your second paragraph, if only because it really doesn't matter in a review what others think of the album, much less your review of it that they may happen to disagree with, be it fans or other critics. I've read people get caught for stuff like that around here, and even myself too, so just passing along some criticism that may help.
Great work on your writing here. It was a good read. pos.

Jared: I see what you mean, it may not belong here. This comes off a little like a response to Sputnik's fervor for the album... which I think, at least, makes it a little weaker generally, but works better in context here, I feel. I dunno if that makes sense haha.

oops didn't even know i wrote those

but works better in context here, I feel. I dunno if that makes sense haha.
Right, which was what I thought you were doing, but I just wanted to make sure. You know the whole "it's better not to write a review out of response" trip, as it's probably why some people might not like this review, but I enjoyed it anyway.
|
| |
I know, it's a perfectly legit complaint with the review, but it was intended... I didn't mind sacrificing a little objectivity because I felt it made this a little more pertinent.

I didn't think this was so bad, I didn't consider it much in terms of the genre though. I was too young at the time so I didn't get into post hardcore until a couple of years ago, fancy giving me some album or band recommendations?

Dogget just pick some off of this, can't go wrong

I have one album on that list and I've only heard of 4 of the bands or something, god I suck.
Thanks though

Eric I do want to say one thing-- the review reads a little like "I know about post-hardcore and I'm gonna namedrop some bands that people who like Emery won't know hahaha look at me." You know what I mean? It's still a great review though and I pos'd and all.
|
| |
Ugh, I'm really no expert Romulus and I was afraid of that : (
but on the other hand that's part of my point. Emery is a watered-down version of these other bands, so knowing about these
other bands is kinda part of it.

| |
Don't sweat it, as far as I'm concerned it doesn't affect the quality of the review at all

why is it assumed that people who like this album wouldn't know anything else about the genre?
|
| |
Dogget: a) well, it was kinda a cheap shot at Davey (half-kidding) who, in his 5 review for this declared this the best post-hardcore album even, but then promptly realized he hadn't heard any other good post-hardcore.
b) idk, not tryig to be a jerk (bc I'm really no expert) but you yourself just realized you hadn't heard so so many of those essentials on the list I just posted
|
| |
eh, these are some of my favorites, to be honest... I've done Built to Spill, Bat For Lashes, Metric, Margot and the Nuclear so and so's, among a few others off the top of my head
|
| |
Certainly wasn't expecting this. Great review.

NEG NEG NEG NEG NEG NEG
Jk man, I completely disagree with the review, but still deserves a pos nonetheless
