True. I'll still take Dark Ages as my favorite though, love that record. Though it must be noted, the album I haven't heard by them is the debut (ironic, I know)

Its pretty nu metal, probably right up your alley ;)

lol haha, well at least that's what makes me special - I never mind good nu metal, on the contrary, I enjoy it, as weird as that might seem to most people

Nothing wrong with that at all

"I never mind good nu metal"
there's good nu metal?

Wait, since when did you become contributor? I never re-applied myself, thought that all positions were filled for some time. Congrats man, you deserve it. Achievement earns automatic pos.

Thanks guys
Nag - well, they didn't exactly give me a heads-up either haha (not that I'm complaining). I just came on sputnik (I believe it was 2 days ago) and suddenly looked that a couple of people are congratulating me with no apparent reason. Scrolled up my profile page and spotted the nice red Contributor title under my name. And thanks man.
silentpotato - this is much more focused and varied (well that is relative like I said in the review, but for a Soulfly record it is) than Conquer was. My favorite Soulfly record after Dark Ages.

I found most of this pretty ordinary.

Well yeah by the general sound Omen is still the Soulfly we've come to know during the years through-and-through, but the added dynamics and more focused approach make it sound more enjoyable than most of their releases imo. To each their own though.

Pretty nervous as this is my first review as a contrib.
About time buddy! Congratulations.
I think you should set aside a paragraph about Cavalera's lol worthy lyrics hahahahaha. Good review, probably going to skip this. Last great thing he made was his s/t.

Not a big fan of this album at all. It's a quite safe, standard Soulfly release. The added dynamics are not very noticeable here especially if you compare it to more experimental metal records released lately.
Given that, Rise Of The Fallen and Counter Sabotage really slay.

Thanks Karl although I have to disagree with you on the fact that the last good thing Cavalera did was Soulfly's s/t, because I do thoroughly enjoy both this and Dark Ages, plus records like Primitive and Prophecy aren't bad either. I think you should set aside a paragraph about Cavalera's lol worthy lyrics hahahahaha Welcome to Mega-Doom, enter the Mega-Doom, follow the Mega-Doom. KILL-IT BLEED-IT, KILL-IT BLEED-IT, KILL-IT BLEED-IT!The added dynamics are not very noticeable here especially if you compare it to more experimental metal records released lately. haha sorry buddy, but comparing this to experimental metal albums doesn't prove anything ;). This is still Soulfly we're talking about, they play nu-thrash, obviously they aren't going to make a 180 degree turn nor create an experimental metal album. They've worked on the little details here and have done it well. Imo the small added dynamics to their sound give a lot to the album, because no-one should go into this expecting a dynamical, multifarious metal album. People will most likely expect this to be a groove-ladden, heavy metal album with tunes to mosh to, and Omen delivers that, while not completele relying on relentless chugging. Definitely better than your "standard" Soulfly album.

I said 'more experimental' as opposed to 'straightforward experimental'. Gosh. I didn't expect them to create a prog metal magnum opus. Strangely I don't really care for this album. I like groovy riffs, but the songwriting is lacking to say the least. My expectations are higher than those of an average Soulfly fan, I guess. Dark Ages was certainly a more daring album.
Besides, Primitive is way more varied than this one imo. This is due to abandoning their tribal influences this time around.

Besides, Primitive is way more varied than this one imo. This is due to abandoning their tribal influences this time around. I don't know about that. They did have their tribal theme pumping on all cylinders there, but on the other hand, the tribal themes and instruments were the only ones that provided the variety. What I was getting at in my review is that this time they've stepped up the song compositions (ie: added leads, solos, more time signatures).

Congrats on becoming Contributor man and great review. I've always thoroughly enjoyed your reviews so it's well deserved. I think i might like this cuz i used to be into Soulfly so maybe this will respark an interest.
