This album was fun when I first began listening to it some years ago, now it is quite boring even. I wish I could get into it more like I was before...

The "first wave of black metal" was not "black metal" per se. It was music that influenced bands of the second wave (that started in Norway, early 90's). So obviously, fans of what we now know as "black metal" will not necessarily enjoy this thrash album with raw production and limited musicianship, other than for its historic importance. Bathory was already closer to the "real" black metal sound.

So, there are a few things about this album that no one has touched on. This album has everything to do with atmosphere. By atmosphere, I mean it is recorded in a manner that you're unlikely to hear elsewhere. Lots of reverb in play here and all of it working to add power and to give you once hell of a monstrous presentation. It's muddy yes, but that muddiness is the engineering magic behind a solid lineup of tracks. The drums, guitars and bass are all recorded in a fashion that I've found unique to just about all of metal. The only other album that comes to mind that gives "Black Metal" a run for money on this sonic level is Iron Angel's "Hellish Crossfire". Another gem if I might add.
So engineering aside, Cronos' delivery is stellar, whether he's belting out grunts or whispering passages during "Buried Alive". His vocal talents are certainly one of the shining points of the record. He's intelligible for the most part which fits my tastes just fine.
If you didn't experience this album back in the 80s or 90s and you've grown accustomed to many of the more Scandinavian efforts then this album definitely comes as a shock. Times have changed and I doubt I'd come to expect anyone to go back and belt out a masterpiece such as this. Not even Venom themselves have figured out how to follow up this effort.

"Not even Venom themselves have figured out how to follow up this effort."
So true.

Great review, at the very least this band deserves respect. Next to Maiden, Priest and Sabbath this is the next most influential band in metal.
