Old Shoes (and Paper Postcards), is probably the best song ever written,
|
| |
It's weird to hear his voice so clean in Ol'55.

So much better than any of his later stuff

my first Tom Waits album was Blood Money
this couldn't be any more different an experience from that if it tried
prefer Blood Money but this is damn fine as a record

Ice Cream Man is probably one of my top 3 Tom Waits tracks.

I'm right in between. I like most of his stuff after this more.

I'm a big fan of all his work, but I think his early material just edges it for me.

i love being edged

God Martha is so frickin great. I love how he completely convincingly tells this story of an old man calling to his long lost love with him being like 24 years old. It shouldn't work but it totally does.

Agreed. It’s also very hard not to join the chorus in a Waits kind of way.
THOSE WERE DAYS OF ROOOOOOOSEEEEESSS

I was playing music with my friends at this restaurant/bar last night and I had on my Tom Waits shirt. This guy yells from the back of the room "play some Tom Waits!" I was like "nobody in the band listens to him except me!" And then he said "Well why don't you just sing one. Sing Ol'55!" So then I sang the opening lines in a somewhat joking Waits voice, and everyone laughed. I don't think the guy expected to see a 19 year old with a Tom Waits shirt, so he got excited. haha

19 was the age I started listening to Tom Waits funny enough
always found him irritating before that

I've been listening to him for about three years now. I got really heavy into his stuff near the beginning but then haven't listened as much. It's time to go through his albums again. I think this one has always been my favorite for some reason. I guess it's easier to hear over and over without getting tired of it, and the quality is still there.

I noticed you haven't rated Alice or Blood Money, those would be great ones to check. Alice is really somber though, so prepare for a downer/slow record
