just got this album... new to meshuggah and all I heard was nothing
I feel like I just got brain fucked. This is the wierdest album I have ever heard, and for some reason, I like it.
Its innovative and is a good place to look if you want something different, which is why I turned to meshuggah in the first place.

I'm not a fan of "I." It's alright i suppose, but i just never really thought it was as great as everyone says. I just feel that this takes everything Meshuggah did, and amped it up, and made it better. It's such a mindfuck to listen to, but the riffs kick some kind of ass.
I haven't heard Nothing yet, but i have all their other full lengths other than their debut.

only thing i really dont like about this album is that it drags on for so effin long, and if you dont listen to the whole thing whenever you listen to it, or skip around it sounds so fucking disjointed

I find that this album goes by relatively quickly to be honest, it feels about 20 minutes shorter than it really is to me.

Chaosphere and Destroy Erase Improve are so much better. Obzen is cool too.

I felt this album was much too gimmicky. After Nothing, they added another string to get attention with their 8-string guitars, not really utilizing a bassist, using a drum machine when you have one of the best drummers out there. The growling vocals sound much poorer than their past efforts. The songs sound more messy and jumbled together with less impressive solo work from Thorendendal. So my 1.5 is a relevant score compared to other albums within the genre and compared to other works by Meshuggah. Just my opionion. At least I'm not just someone that hates metal and is giving low scores for that reason alone.

hahahaha added another string to get attention?? i stopped reading the comment right there.

It reminded me of This is Spinal Tap and how their amps go to 11. Meshuggah's guitars have 8 strings, ooohh.... Seriously though, how does adding another string improve songwriting or overall sound. It adds some originality, I guess I'll give them that. But kind of unnecessary.
|
| |
Exactly, it adds originality in that it is 5 semitones lower than a 7 string, which is in turn 5 semitones lower than a 6 string, and thats the whole point of Meshuggah's guitar sound - having lower bass strings than a lot of other metal bands.

ok, how bout this one. It's kind of like Shavers. Why keep adding blades (I think we have the Mach 5 now). Why not just make a 10 blade razer - Why doesn't some other band come along with a 10 string guitar and say, "look at us, we use 10 strings so we're better and more original". Don't get me wrong, I actually like Meshuggah's sound, just not so much on Catch 33 and Nothing.
|
| |
Well the shaving analogy is a bit invalid because having more strings means that the note is lower, and a lower note has an entirely different response to the distortion.
But whatever. I love Nothing and both songs ive heard from this, so my opinion is completely different to yours.

Ok, I'll admit I've been a little harsh (I just listened to it again). I can't really deny their talent and originality. So I changed to a 2.5. I still much prefer Chaosphere and DEI and I think those albums showed off their technical skills with polyrythms and time changes better.
