For someone who considers himself so much better than everyone on here, you sure spend lots of time mingling with these "inferior specimens" I would've thought that someone with you incredible intellect would have more useful ways to spend his time

But sampling and photography are just products of perception. If you see dogshit as art, then it is art.
Art is about capturing a moment. In that one moment, that dogshit created a reaction in you. Other dogshit is just dogshit, but
that specific dogshit had founded a certain appreciation within you. That's what art does. It's less about the artist and more
about
the art. Right now I'm sitting outside with my laptop and I saw a particular plot of grass from the angle of the chair I was in and
I
noticed the way the grass in that area swerved around each other had a delightful pattern. From this specific perception, I
noticed(reacted) to that plot of grass. That is art.
Why the fuck did my comment come out like that?

It's all good MJ I just can't understand how you say that this is not music, don't get me wrong, I don't like it but I wouldn't say it's NOT music

When I was younger, I didn't want to be like Mike. I wanted to be like.....Ike-Ice Cube

My art teacher said art can be anything we want it to be and if that's the case than the word "art" is a relatively empty term that loses all it's value when it can be applied to anything. I don't know, just my opinion on the subject. Prove me wrong if you want. I like this kind of discussion.

really wtf@this whole thing. If you want to talk about some philosophical shit go do it
in another forum. The review has nothing to do with anything and Converge had to write this because if
they didn't.....it wouldn't have been released with CONVERGE as the band name.

I meant to say products(which I changed it to).
Samplers and cameras only capture and enhance the original art that you saw in the already existing sound or visual. They are only extensions of your eyes and ears, which are the ones who heard such sounds or saw the piece of dogshit. So maybe the dogshit itself is not art, but how you perceive it is.

Poet: The conversation is entirely relevant. If MJ is right, than his review makes sense(well not really, but that's a whole other story). If I'm right, then his main point is flawed.

Think in terms of taking a mental snapshot of something. That is for recalling a specific image or sound you heard or saw in a specific moment. While the sound or visual was not intended for art, it is art to your eyes and ears. That is the cause of sampling and photography. To re-call this moment.

Hmm. Well I'd love to continue this discussion, but I have other work to attend to. However I still don't see how this album isn't music.
Like I said before, the minute Converge decided to make an album and start making noises, it was music.

arguing that because the lyrics are non-specific, this album isn't music is probably the dumbest thing anyone on this site has ever done

It would be a decent argument if this was one of the few cases of bands/artists doing that. There are hundreds of albums that write lyrics like this, and I really don't think that is to the artists' discredit. What about Bob Dylan? Roger Waters? Or even someone a little more contemporary like Max Bemis? Are they all terrible artists because their lyrics are incredibly specific?

I'm aware of that, but does that mean that every band or artist that does this is as terrible as you believe it to be? Or are you just using Jane Doe as a popular example on this site to help boost your audience?
