"It seems that Gabriella Cilmi is partial to one of the stranger pre-gig rituals. The 'On a Mission' singer apparently likes to get her band to punch her before she goes on stage. Cilmi admits that she gets paralysed with nerves before heading out in front of a crowd and she gets people to inflict pain on her as a sobering method before a show.



She told UK entertainment site BANG Showbiz: "I like to feel alive, so I like to feel pain ... I just need someone to bring me back down to earth and say 'this is real and what you are doing is real'. You are alive."

"I kind of lose my head before I go on stage," she added.



When asked about her upcoming performance at Melbourne's Grand Prix, Cilmi said, "It is really nerve-wracking, there's some 200 million people that will be watching so it's pretty scary." Cilmi will be singing her own rendition of the national anthem at the event. "I'm nervous every time I perform, but as soon as I get there on stage I'm fine."
