it'll bore you to death. I've heard this album at least ten times and still could hardly tell the first three songs apart. Could be wrong on this one though, it was a looong time ago.

This is brilliant. First disc is incredible. I'll never get tired saying that Rene Rutten is one of the most underrated guitarists.

Damn, a 5 by Dewi? This is almost a 5 for me as well but I prefer the more doomy/metal approach of the previous two albums. And yeah Travel is one of the best songs by The Gathering and especially the last minutes contain some of the most emotional music I've ever heard.

Mandylion is almost a hard 5 too for me, not so much Nighttime Birds although I do love that album. This one has an emotional connection with things past manosg, same as the two after this, but Anneke on this one, holy shit man, the voice of a goddess.

Same here Dewi. Got Mandylion and Theatre of Tragedy - Velvet Darkness... the very same day some 20-22 years ago and I always used to jam them together. Each album I was jamming at the time felt the best one and my opinion always changed every damn time.

When the video for "Leaves" came out from Mandylion there was a general meltdown on my group of friends. I hate to admit it but everyone started jamming The Gathering because everyone had a crush on her lol.

Definitely played a role. Actually, iirc, I saw Anneke on a Metal Hammer issue months after jamming Mandylion haha. Goes to show you how much youtube has changed music nowadays.

Oh man Metal Hammer, I bought that shit religiously every month. That and buying LPs because of the cover was a classic. Many good albums were discovered that way.
Good old times manosg.

For sure, Dewi. One thing that was good about buying physical copies (magazines, LPs) and being on a strict budget as a young dude, was that you gave everything the time it deserved. Didn't matter if an album didn't click with you so much on first listen, you kept jamming because at least it was new music and this way you were discovering more about the music. Same thing with Metal Hammer, first I used to read what looked interesting but then I read the whole damn thing because I had to wait for a month for the next issue.

You can't be more right man. Now we have access to so much shit and there is so much stuff out there that is difficult to get intimate with anything.
Not counting the fact that any mf with a pc can make amazing music nowadays. That music being available for everyone in a matter of minutes.

Yup. Good and bad at the same time because there are some really talented people out there who make great honest music from their bedroom. But as you said, not easy to connect. Like, only recently I started searching Bandcamp and it's madness. But the thing is, if those guys cannot live from their music how will they keep making great music?
