I love that Can I Live is literally just him rapping over the instrumental of Isaac Hayes' The Look of Love, no chopping or splicing or anything. Song was a ready made hip-hop beat back in 1970.

That was ok to do in the 90s. Nowadays people look down on a lifted loop because it requires no "talent" lol. Not to mention the copyright issues.

I have no problem with it, sometimes less is more. Snoop used the same instrumental but due to copyright issues it was removed from later issues of Doggystyle, so yeah there is the copyright problem.

Relistened to this for the first time in a while recently. Feelin' It totally made me forget I lived in California. People always say illmatic paints a picture of ny, but no song has ever made me feel like I'm actually there like Feelin It.

Also Dead Presidents II is one of the best hip hop songs of all time

It's about fucking time this clicked for me. It's been over a year.

Been waiting for this to click with me tbh. I think I've been exposed to too much "modern" Jay-Z that it's more difficult to like him when he was actually putting out good shit

Am I going crazy or did this album used to be called 'Reasonable Debut' on here?

I swear I used to read it as that.

Na I swear that's what it was, I remember it vividly.

Bruh it took over a year to finally click with me. Only happened last night lol. I think as I listened to his 2 collab albums with R. Kelly it made me just like him more. I've always wanted to love him for some reason and I've always liked him a lot regardless of the music for some reason. If that makes any sense.

"return to the 36 >"

Good album for sure, but I'm not entirely sure it deserves all the 5's or 4.5's it's getting. I'd say Liquid Swords places higher.

I'm 1'ing all of his albums as a placeholder until he puts them on Spotify.
