All aspects of the album are excellent: lyrics, singing, instrumentation, arrangement, composition......and most important...Energy and Soul. The weakest point on the album is "Check my Brain", but that song is good too.

i like check my brain. Its like a groove metal grunge song.
'first couple of ballads haven't really done much for me yet'
me either
'I thought it was incredibly lackluster compared to the new direction of the opener track, so perhaps it was simply where the track was placed'
i think it is just the placing of the song that makes it seem odd because it really is a good song. its a big contrast from all other songs from the album but i like the sound. its good to hear the band having a bit of fun with a song after everything they've been through.
Can somebody remind me how to insert quotes please

I can't believe an Alice In Chains album is in my top 10 for the year during 2009.

It didn't even take me too many listens to like it. There are a few songs that honestly Layne would tear up. But Duvall holds it down. Check my brain got annoying since its on the radio every day. But also mixed with the thought "Im listening to new AIC on the radio this is badass" It is the weakest song, and only due to the chorus which I don't really like, or the whole "oh yeah" verses, but the riff is good. As well as the first single which kicked ass.

Yeah, if someone told me the layout of the new album's first radio single would look like this:
_________ sun, oh yeah
_________ run, oh yeah
*chorus*
I would've been really scared for the album.

It was made to be a single but its a hell of a lot better than a lot of crap that gets played nowadays anyway

Very, very true. It's not bad at all, just not up to the standards the rest of the songs set imo.

But the general vibe of album reminds me of Cantrell's solo work. Which isn't a bad thing, I mean I enjoyed it; just not as much as Alice with Layne. Hopefully I will enjoy this album, so far 'take her out', 'check my brain', 'private hell' and 'black gives way to blue' seem great.

I'm starting to feel like maybe duvall is trying to sound more like layne than his actual singing voice. some parts feel a little forced to me..

Great review actually although i disagree on some points...this is no biggie.
I think the first song is dirgey in that way that alice can really nail. great opener and the lyrics are very poignant for the start of the first album since all thats happened.
One thing i hate is the term grunge though. There was a grunge sound BUT alice, nirvana, soundgarden and pearl jam (the big four of the seattle rock explosion) werent anything like that sound at all. These bands have NOTHING in common really sound wise.
Alice are metal band...thats it.
Anyway. Awesome album. I do hear bits where you expect laynes voice to burst in but thats natural with the album sounding SO much like an alice in chains record. William is good...doesnt try to steal the show and sounds like layne without sounding like layne if that makes sense? His voice intertwines very well with Jerry's.
Im 4 listens through now and Im in love with it. Its very worthy of the alice in chains name.
