this worries me. what i've heard hasn't blown me away, so i'll approach it with caution.

seriously, this album isnt going to blow you away in 1 listen like deadwing or in absentia did ( well to me)...it has to grow on you

Deadwing isn't even that good. In Absentia is their only album that truly lives up to the hype and delivers on each track.

in absentia is pretty boring, one of few albums I'll never buy from PT

nice review man. I agree with you on many points, including that nothing on this really stuns the listener. The guitar solo in Time Flies definitely has David Gilmour influence. IMO that is the best track on this.

FOABP is their best, then IA, Deadwing, and Stupid Dream

In Absentia is overrated but good. This probably comes in third after Deadwing and Fear of a Blank Planet, for me

This album, similar to a watching a great movie for the hundredth time, can be fun and enjoyable, but it still misses that sense of wonder and suspense one gets from something totally new.
Awesome.
Damn good review. From the samples I've heard, I'm still stoked.

PT are possibly my favourite band so it's impossible for me to judge objectively. However, i can honestly say that this is the first time (and i have all of their albums) that i have to literally FORCE myself to listen again in the hope that it grows on me...and that just hasn't happened. Also, its the first time a PT album has nothing special and new to distinguish it from their previous albums.
Sure, production is excellent, and there are some interesting moments but the best parts are mostly the short songs (lasting 1 to 2 minutes) there's no real climax, "time flies" is unnecessarily long and you never really get the feeling that cd 1 is one song. I think they should stick to making 17 minute songs (i.e. anesthetize, which is a masterpiece!)
cd 2 on the other hand is more interesting although most of it is waaaay too pink floydy (even for PT!)

Your second to last paragraph pretty much sums up the album for me. I think this is PT by the
numbers, nothing new and exciting is to be found here. It's not bad, but it's certainly not
excellent.
Good review though.

Thats the best way to get into PT I would say.

Good review. This album was a massive dissapointment, unfortunately.

mutha fukin page turn
|

i must say that i take the edited version of time flies over the full anyday, the middle part is so drawn out and boring that its ridiculous, I hate when PT does that
|

Deadwing and In Absentia are their best.

'I listened to it several times through and immediately found things that I really, really liked, but I realized I was very rarely moved beyond typical enjoyment'
Yep, well said. Thats pretty much exactly how I feel. I really dig some parts, but wasnt really *moved* by anything. I suppose its a bit much to expect it.
Its still a good album, just not their best. Time Flies kicks arse though.
