I actually find this album really good. I definitely prefer listening to this album rather than

Perfect Strangers. Of course it cannot be considered a classic DP album, mainly because Blackmore and

Gillan were not on speaking terms at that time and as a result, the magic of some previous albums is

missing.

Nevertheless, a solid effort.

I totally respect that. One of the songs that I like best from the Perfect Strangers album, Son of Alerik, didn't make the final cut which is inexplicable to me.

Couldn't get past the first song. First DP album that does that to me.

Whoa, didn't see that coming. It happens some times though. Maybe you should give it a chance in the future since you like the band so much.

I enjoyed this album I must say. It is based on the same formula as Perfect strangers as the similarities are obvious. Not something original but I cannot rank this amongst their worst

Given that its the album after the excellent comeback 'Perfect strangers', I wouldn't be surprised if any devoted Deep Purple fan said this was disappointing. It's certainly not quite the Deep Purple people must have been expecting in 1987, but it does have a few surprisingly good moments. Blackmore's guitar work largely complements the quirky nature of 'Black and white' and 'The spanish archer', and Jon Lord's keyboard interludes, although reeking strongly of the 80s, do still give an extra layer of excellence to the general sound. But with songs as unfortunately inconsistent as 'Call of the wild' and the overlong 'Strangeways', "House of blue light" should and could have been better. Even with this line-up though, the band certainly weren't about to fall flat on their face anytime soon.

Not a bad album; as mentioned before, Perfect Strangers is slightly better, imo.

Ok, this is simply offending. I mean, the production is even worse than PS, the riffing worse than PS, the vocal melodies worse than PS. Even more generic, even more lifeless. Why?

Why?

Why?
