I think House of Blue Light is underrated. Mark II 2.0 was a great reunion.

The House of Blue Light isn't bad at all. I actually prefer it to this one.

Poor release, imo. First of all, the incredibly, atrociously dated 80's production (generic distortion, the lifeless drum sound, synths etc.) is sure to bring this down for a 3.5 for me. Yeah, it's that bad to my ears, even if it had classic songwriting in it.

Then, you have the actual songs. Beginning with Burn and until now, I have yet to find more than 5 classic Purple tunes in that period's albums, and this record is no exception. "Generic riffs, generic vocal melodies, generic solos" is the main dish of the album. Songs like these could be written by anybody, especially during the 80's. This is not Blackmore, not the Blackmore I love at least. And Gillan is not at the top of his game, either. There is nothing on this album a young admirer of Gillan couldn't reproduce.

Bad taste, truly bad taste this one.

Man, I know it's tastes and all, and I completely respect that, but a 4.5?

I know this is Purple in safe mode (Gillan not going with super high notes, simpler drumming, etc)

But for a reunion album of a band that was already aging I think this is fantastic. Gillan's singing is catchy as hell throught the whole album and the melodies of the songs are pretty smooth and catchy as well with Lord driving them plus Blackmore solos are pretty sweet even if short

But it is incredibly derivative, wouldn't you agree? Riffs and melodies like that were commonplace in the 80's (Def Leppard, Bon Jovi, Scorpions etc.).Personally, I can't find any redeeming qualities to it, but I respect your view about it ;)

Certainly, originality isn't the main characterstic of the album taht's why I said they're playin in safe mode. However, even if not original, the melodies are, in my opinion, of more quality than the ones you could see in Bon Jovi or Def Leppard

As for 80's Scorpions, Love at First Sting is better than this for me, but I prefer this one over Blackout

Definitely respect your opinion too m8
