I associate this album with the worst wave of depression I've felt in my (short) life so far - and my recovery from that same wave. It's still one of my go-to albums on days when that depression rears its ugly head again.
Top 20 album of all time for me.

This is the first you spoke of it
In your black magic house in a cold damp attic
Two windows stare at us like eyes
Behind them December's dark early morning sky
And a couple of dead trees
With their ornamental stars

For each day that I procrastinate listening to his solo work and Sun Kil Moon, he releases another album.

Now this is a beaut. The long songs are devastating.

Katy Song breaks you down, Funhouse fucks you up

"Mother" erases all hope, and then the closing one-two punch of "Strawberry Hill" and "Brown Eyes" restores every ounce of that hope.
As far as sequencing of emotional impact goes, this album is nigh unbeatable.

I can definitely see that. The first couple songs ease you in before “Katy Song”, you get another couple less intense ones before “Funhouse”. First couple listens the stretch of standard length songs in the middle blew past me a bit but on third listen those are starting to click too.

So have all the other Kozelek albums I’ve tried and so far none have quite gotten there so we’ll see. This doesn’t sound like the most varied album I’ve heard from him so far so that may give it a leg up, but it’s also the longest so that could work against it.

Need to spin this again, I have a feeling it deserves to be in 4.5 territory
