Opeth is starting to bug me.

Somehow I always link this band to the Gathering...
When this new breed of goth-tinged metal started surfacing, Century Media advertised them all together as one cohesive unit under their Magic Arts imprint. So they were trying to link bands such as Sentenced, Samael, The Gathering, Tiamat, etc together in people's minds. It seems to have worked ;)

Yeah well they did it before Opeth, their vocalist sounds different, and the influences lean more to the prog than the metal. It's really an album of its own that you need to hear a few times before you realise they were onto something when they made this.

I like this more than what came after or before, for me this stands as the seminal Tiamat album.

I don't link Sentenced or Samael to this band though (though I love Sentenced's The Cold White Light...)

Samael is great, but they are definitely nothing like this.

I'm not saying they are, I was just talking about the marketing campaign that Century Media engaged in when this came out.

I just thought it was the similar sort of sound between Gathering and Tiamat that inextricably linked them, or it may be the Ayreon connection. Who knows.

I'm pretty sure he says the word how Altmer has it written though.
