This album is great. True, the initial shine wears off after a while, but it's still an awesome album - even if the singer does remind me a bit of that guy from The Mars Volta.

i am quite sad about the album.
technically, there are no open questions. but that is sure. they are unbelievably skilled musicians, especially the guitar work is from outer space on some parts.
but that isn't the point. i for myself hyped "the penance & the patience". i loved this EP. really. i loved the perfect bridge between the land of catchiness and the land of technical finesse. this band was my biggest hope for '09, along with "we are the ocean". in my opinion they both play quite comparable things. they both could be the next alexisonfire, at least mess with names like saosin or conditions, if they change their style a bit. there is and was SO much potential, that i could cry my eyes of for the way, they took.
"first temple" has become the convulsive try to mess with TMV and FOT. but why? because to show HOW FAR they can go with their skills? surely not. because of the producer/label? maybe. the guys own decision? possible, but if true - very sad.
i cannot explain to myself, why a band, that could be the next alexisonfire(reduce the technique a bit, give some more catch/heart), or at least the next saosin, chooses the way to be the next the mars volta. i'm very heartstricken about the fact that these crazy talented guys only want to show the biggest technical balls and to show TMV their tongues.
listen to "penance & the patience" twice. then tell me how many refrains you are able to sing. i bet more than two. then listen to "first temple" twice and tell me the same fact. i swear: not even two.
all in all a good album. technically godlike, but missing the old charm and choruses of "the penance & the patience".
conclusion: goodbye catchiness, hello technical orgasm.
my only hope is, that "we are the ocean" will decide better, release a straighter album, and finally become the next alexisonfire.
regards

"Strong songs devoid of bullshit." I love me some strong songs devoid of bullshit, and as a roo rooting Australian I will support this band.

I've heard the first 3 songs, and it's really really good! Sounds A LOT like TMV. Good review.

The entire album is fantastic. And the TMV resemblence wore off after getting more familiar with the album

The singer sounds exactly like Cedric, and the instrumentation is like a hybrid of TMV and The Fall of Troy. But yeah that doesn't bother me at all.
