I kinda like this. Oh and in the beginning of the first paragraph you say there's only 4 good bright eyes albums but at the end of that paragraph you say 5. make up your mind.

He said Conor had five good albums, including one solo album and four Bright Eyes albums.

This is more like letting the band do their thing than Conor having any real catharsis.

That said, Chan, your first paragraph is wrong. Desaparecidos is great.

this album is just terrible. His singing is terrible, his songwriting has no emotion, and the band just sucks. Overall this is probably the most dissapointing record of 2009.

I thought breaking away from Bright Eyes would result in a series of great albums. Unfortunately, I was wrong. After last years great self titled, we get this pile mediocrity. Only a few songs are any good, and that doesn't say much for a 16 song album. You almost get the feeling Oberst is trying to mimic Dylan here and make his own Basement Tapes, except when Oberst tries it, the songs don't have half the wit or hazy brilliance that Dylan's recordings with the Band did.

As everyone else has said, big thumbs down. This Message Edited On 05.05.09

this is an excellent review.

i'm still a huge fan of old bright eyes, up to Lifted pretty much and then I still like Digital Ash because it was the first bright eyes record i heard nostalgia blah blah blah. this new stuff, though, i can't stand at all.
