One of the best things about the Decemberists has been their storytelling but this album throws that out the window, so all of these noobs that got into them through TCW all blow a load over this of course.

Ya all those noobs who recognised their best album for what it is ...their best album. This grew on me, was pretty disappointed at first.

Gave this a listen today and it was better than I had expected. I'd never heard anything by them before, but liked the majority of this, though I thought it dragged on a bit towards the end. I've given it a 3 for now, but my rating will probably increase with repeated listens.

Female guest vocalists really push this album up another level for me. I was really surprised to hear My Brightest Diamond's singer.

First album that I could comfortably rate as 'classic.'
Let me revoke all my other '5' ratings on undeserving albums...

if you take EW srsly, you wont be listening to any decent music.
looks like they got this one right tho.
the production is one of the main things that irks me. and ive never liked this band's vocals/lyrics. worse than the crane wife which was borderline decent and had some pretty cool songs. this just sounds like theyre trying to hard to create some epic concept album. the recurring riffs and reprises are pretentious and ruin it for me.

This album is pretty boring in most parts to me. I'm actually really disappointed, as I've been listening to the Decemberists for a few years now.
I enjoy their folk-indie-rock/pop tunes way more than this transition into some kind of prog/indie album rock style. The album is really repetitive, which I probably wouldn't mind if I was really into the tunes that repeat, but they just don't have that sort of appeal to me to make me want to hear them over and over.
There are a few highlights, but I think the album is pretty average. Castaway and Cutouts remains my favorite of theirs, closely followed by The Crane Wife; both excellent albums and sounds more natural.
3/5

I'm going to sound stupid, but what does ffs mean?
A FF is a flashforward. Which is a story-telling device used on the amazing ABC show LOST.

Yep.

Shara Worden sounds amazing. She is the real highlight of the record. "Repaid" is a magnificent rocker, and her voice is just in a league of its own. No one can touch her.
It's a shame she only has two songs. :[
