I dig some ambient or minimal electronic stuff, but yeah maybe this is just too droning/repetitive for my tastes.

This is an archetypal ambient album though :{

This is the archetype of a certain type of ambient maybe, but when I think of archetypal ambient records I think of like Substrata, Mirages, or Pop. This is more drone than ambient imo.

This also has a distinct classical feeling of someone "playing" the music. Whereas the records I mentioned feel much more autonomous and as if they are playing themselves, which in my personal opinion is what makes something feel "ambient". Maybe that wasn't the original meaning of the term but hey

which is why this album is the inspiration for every piece of music I ever make. Marriaging personal expression along with the pastiches of sound that make up most of the msic we ever hear (half heard/slow tones in the background) is why this means so much to me I think

It's an important distinction. Their "Neoclassical" sound really makes this feel so organic. I remember the first few times listening to this and not even comprehending what instruments were being played. (Like Zaruyache said) It was just swells and swells of organic sensation with its own mind.

* While not comprehending the instruments, immediately noticing: "Oh, this is acoustic." Vs. most ambient experiences which are "this came from computers and stuff and that's just beyond my knowledge."

Played cello in middle school. Discovering this band made cello 1000x cooler to me.

that weekend (kranky's 20th) saw performances by stars of the lid, keith fullerton whitman, pan dot american, grouper, benoit pioulard, tim hecker, and loscil

I will use the record like I do with AWVFTS self-titled: put it on let it spin for background noise while reading. A nice Saturday morning treat.
