I probably haven't heard enough lo-fi stuff yet, but based on my experiences so far you'd be right, haha. I definitely have the capacity to like some BM though.

Did you find the melodic side easier at first? I really dig Dissection, Sacramentum & Necrophobic (particularly TNS).
Marrow of the Spirit/Axioma Ethica Odini are 4.5s as well, maybe because they move a little further away from BM idk.
Winter by Fen is excellent too.

Yep for sure. I started with bands like Cradle of Filth and Dimmu Borgir then moved to Dissection, Emperor, etc and then finally stuff like this, Darkthrone and Mayhem.
Once you get past/start to dig the essentials then you can start digging deeper. I'd rec trying out Moonsorrow and/or Primordial next if you haven't heard them.

Check some Icelandic bands, Nadra, Misthyrming, Carpe Noctem, and Sinmara especially. That whole scene got me into bm generally, and it's really quality stuff.
