i really dont know if "John Wayne Gacy Jr." is that sad...

its kinda mellow, and thought provoking...

i totally agree with Casimir Pulaski Day...

although I like "The Predatory Wasp of The Palisades Is Out to get us"

it's clearly about preteen sexual confusion.

How is "John Wayne Gacy, Jr." not sad? Besides that song, the only other good tracks are "Casimir Pulaski Day" and "Chicago". So yeah, this is the most overrated album of the year.

If there are only three good songs off the album than how does this manage to receive a 3/5 rating from you, Eliminator?

The first five tracks are excellent, the first third of the album is simply brilliant.

After that I think that 'Illinois' is sort of on and off. The short 20 second tracks get tedious, and the album gets boring and loses my attention quickly. That being said 'Illinois' is still a great album. This Message Edited On 01.19.06

come on feel the illinois part 2 and concerning the ufo sighting are my favorites on the album, followed closely by jacksonville, decator, and the ones you can't possible not like like chicago, casimir pulaski day, and john wayne gacy jr. the album is pretty much fantastic and i'm not exactly sure who overrates it. pitchfork?

I thought this was called 'Illinoise'

The cover says Come On Feel the Illinoise and is often mistakingly referred to as such (or alternatively as Illinoise) but the actual title is indeed Illinois. This Message Edited On 01.20.06

'Concerning The UFO Sighting' and 'Come On! Feel The Illinois' are good as well. Certainly better than 'Chicago'.

judging by the track titles, this guy is the most pretencious artist of all time

When I had to explain this CD to a friend of mine, I recall telling him it was as if Kid A, and the Rentals had sex and used an acoustic guitar as the condom.

Maybe he'll incorporate a couple states on one album to save time, creativity, and lose the possibility of repetition.

All in all, I'll listen...

I wouldn't say so... it's all on purpose.

To me, this was one of those albums that everyone knew about and thought no one else knew about. Lot of hate getting thrown around about it, too. Might as well contribute...

First of all, I'm a huge Sufjan fan. When I first heard Illinois, I really thought it was inferior to Michigan in most respects... too long, too much material, unfocused, etc etc. Then I kept listening. I honestly think his songwriting, and more importantly his albumwriting, have improved tremendously since even Seven Swans. The album really sounds like a tribute to the state, convering the good and bad, old and young, big and small.

Regardless, I eagerly await the next state. I bet he gets out of the midwest and does Massachusetts or New Jersey.

I love this cd so much.

At least right now. I hope it's not one of those albums that you listen to a lot and then never listen to it again. It doesn't seem like it.

I wish he'd put out a setlist of the states to come, so I know when to let my excitement become overwhelmed.

i think as a concept album it fulfills its amibition and then some. as an indie rock album, it's lacking. just plain boring most of the time, but the standouts are just fucking amazing.

I agree with everyone else, there is some filler on this disc. That being said, the choice cuts are some incredibly brilliant songs.

Good review, too.

This CD was shorter than I expected based on the constant complaints against its length. There's some filler, but the good tracks make up for that. I really enjoyed it, I think I might listen to Michigan tommorow.

Rhapsody has Sufjain :D
