I can't figure out whether this is actually good or just really influential.

This is kinda post metal-ish, especially Like Herod is very heavy and dark for a post rock song. The guitars are more than sludgey enough to be played on a 2000's "proper" post metal album

Ehh, some post rock is a tad heavy though. Like Jakob and We Lost The Sea. Sometimes the two are combined but idk this is just straight post rock to me. Either way, just kick ass music.

I get what you mean but that track specifically qualifies as post metal for me. Bands like Russian Circles also move between the line of post rock and post metal on their albums, so this is nothing all that uncommon

considering this came out earlier than bands who learned how to tow that fine line like RC and If These Trees Could Talk and that rock can still get heavy with crescendos and dynamics, this is post-rock true-and-true. may as well call Sonic Youth post-metal since they get to the same level of heaviness as is on here.

Of the non-GYBE post-rock, this is by far the best.
