nice, and bummer about the pops, man :/

this album was probably the first explicitly electronic album i jammed, it'll probably always have some place in my heart. i've mostly been focusing on this, autobahn, and computer world, i should jam that one more often as well.

It irks me that this has the most ratings of any Kraftwerk and it hasn't reached 500. Even if you didn't like the music, aren't people curious enough about the history of popular electronic music to hear the band that started it all? It's just nuts.

tbh Silver Apples are like a bridge between something like "Tomorrow Never Knows" and Kraftwerk but I wouldn't say they started EDM or anything like that

Really weird how this album can sound so dated and so timeless at the exact same time

It's extra weird that simplicity is both the reason for its timelessness as well as its datedness

It sounds extremely barebones and underdeveloped technologically but the band was smart enough to focus solely on its melodies and songwriting instead of flashyness and they're both rock solid, so its dated sound palette doesn't really work against it in any significant way and if anything only adds a more unique flavor to it.

Great record, Neon Lights is one of the most lovely songs I've heard

While I agree with you assessment, however obvious it might be, since that's pretty much what defines the appeal of Kraftwerk, I think Kraftwerk was very aware of what they were doing. This album lacks a bit of texture which I think was on purpose to strengthen the robotic theme. Pretty much the perfect electronic record.

Surprisingly good stoner jam as well.

It's obvious now but part of the appeal of them at the time was the novelty factor of them doing and exploring things that were basically uncharted at the time. The sort of stuff these guys were doing was unlike anything else before save for maybe Silver Apples (maybe), and their semi-futuristic aesthetic was completely unheard of in the mainstream.

This appeal doesn't really exist anymore, but they were levelheaded enough to keep in mind that that wouldn't sell their music forever so they made some rock solid melodies and rhythms to back it all up, which I admire them for. In the end the dated novelty factor actually enhances the album for me because unlike other novelties, it's not intrusive, it's integrated flawlessly with the music, and it makes it feel unique even 40+ years on.
