This album is stronger and raps less than System's previous works. Violent Pornography's lyrics sicken me, and personally, I think the song is a piece of sh*t. Otherwise, BYOB and Soldier Side are both highlights, but...the rest of the album, with some exceptions (Lost in Hollywood, Sad Statue) was a bit of a disappointment, especially after Guitar World hyped it as "album of the year" and "System's life after nu-metal".

This is easily SOAD's worst album. Their innovation, to me, seems to be running thin. It seems that every song on this album has been done before on previous ones, only better. Plus, Malakian sings almost constantly. I thought it was fun on Prison Song on Toxicity, but when every song has that crappy nasal voice almost leading the way, it just gets old. Some might say that Steal This Album is worse, but if you think about it, the concept behind that album was that they weren't going to release those songs to begin with. They wrote thirty-some songs for Toxicity and were going to trow the rest away until they found out that people were begging for them and paying too much money for them.

As far as the songs go, most are pretty much standard SOAD songs. The songs that stick out to me are This Cocaine... and Cigaro.

(sorry for the 2 posts, but it said my initial comment was too long)

BYOB is just plain annoying. The barbecue motif is lame and the message, "why don't presidents fight the war... why do they always send the poor..." or whatever is, well, wrong. In fact, 30 of 43 US presidents have served in the millitary (well, Polk was in a militia, but I still count that) and we send the poor to wars because they enlist.

Their first album and Toxicity are still two of my favorite albums, but this one definately falls short, for me anyway.

I really like this album. I was afraid that SOAD was not going to progress after their first three releases were gradually less impressive, but they brought themselves back up with this one. "Question!" is possibly my favorite song by the band of all, and that's saying something since I liked so many of the self-titled album's songs. Great album, can't wait for Hypnotize to complete the deal.

I agree YDload, Questions! is an amazing song, the best on the CD. I think the weakest track on the album is Old School Hollywood. 4/5This Message Edited On 09.14.05

I thought the opposite actually. "Question!" never appealed to me at all and I always thought "Violent Pornography" was good but not one of the best tracks on the album. I think "Old School Hollywood" is a really good track.

i would have to say my favorite track is "Sad Statue". its a solid song and i love the chorus. i do have to say that "Old School Hollywood" is its weakest song. lyrically, its not so good. and its a little too different, even from SOAD standards, that they didnt pull it off quite like they might've liked to.

My song recommendations: "This Cocaine...", "Sad Statue", "Violent Pornography", and "Lost in Hollywood"

much different from Toxicity, but still got that good sound, the sound only found from SOAD - hard, fast, totally out of it (+ almost, sort of funny at times (e.g:Violent Pornography ; Oldschool Hollywood) )

it is a b-sides, SOAD just wanted people to think it wasn't really so that more people would buy it.

its weird, i first heard of SOAD around the toxicity days because all i remember people wearing was "Toxicity" T-shirts. Since im not one to follow the crowd, (because i think it shows a lack of originality, not because im angry at the mainstream.......f**kin emo children) i didnt really get into them. It was until BYOB that i actually got a good listen at what SOAD had to offer. Since i absolutely loved the song, i did some searches for other songs, and i got to "Chop Suey!" from that point, i knew i had to buy Mezmerize because their music (especially their ability to go from a hard, HARD rocking verse into a steady, powerful chorus) really impressed me. I got Mezmerize and absolutely loved it. The only songs i didnt care for so much were Old School Hollywood and Radio/Video. I didnt like Radio/Video because it sounded too much like "actual music" than "Soad". By that i mean it seemed a little too much like what anyone else might've done. OSH was just a techno thing i didnt really connect with. Anyway, unbelievable band, excellent album, CAN NOT wait till Hypnotize!

Album raiting 5/5

To me this is System of a Down's best work that they have done. The Harmony between Serj and Darons voice is excellent, and everything Daron does with his guitar in this album is just his own thing, he never seems to run out of ideas. Though it was a little short I can never get sick of it.

Mezmerize is in my own opinion the best album of SOAD.
Every song to me 5/5
I could listen to the whole album without any problem.

your review was cool but I would give the overall CD rating 5/5

p.s. I can't wait for Hypnotize in late 2005.

Keep up the good music SOAD

SOAD is really good. so yeah... When u said the thing about early metal did you mean around the time of Ride the Lightning and that era? Because that was one of metal's finest eras.

Your review was good, but I was pretty offended by your shot at Mudvayne, just like antihero. Mudvayne is original in every way, and I think they are a far better band than SOAD. Lyrically, technically, and musically, I think they achieve way more. They are the best nu metal band out there, way above Korn, Slipknot, and SOAD.
