A highlight of this album for me would definately be the drumming.
I'm a big fan of John Staniers work, and Tomahawk is no exception.

this is so much different than what i expected...
i like it though. but i was definitely expecting there to be more bungle-like experimentation.

I can deal with someone not liking the album, but watered-down FNM? Nu-metal?
Maybe it's because I've only heard the Angel Dust album, but I don't hear any similarity in the sounds of FNM and Tomahawk. And as far as nu-metal goes... Sure, the band's more accessible for the general masses. Not as much as FNM, but whatever. But it doesn't sound like any nu-metal I've heard.
I can respect your opinion, but not the reasoning behind it.

first album was better i reckon
the beatboxing at the beginning of capt. midnight is ****ing bad
they opened with birdsong when i saw em live (going to see fantomas on may29th at London Astoria )

I feel so jealous of you...Fantomas is the only good band ever to come here, and it's their only 21 and over show on the whole tour:upset:
I kind of agree with Zappa, but for different reasons. I don't find it to be nu-metal or anything like that, but it seems bland. There's almost nothing memorable on this album at all. I listen to it occasionally, but not very often.
2/5

it should also be noted that the production on mit gas exceeds that of the self-titled album considerably...and deep bass permeates more naturally

I love mit gas. Upon first hearing I was not totally blown away. But upon repeated listening (with ear phones) I became increasingly blown away. The chorus of capt.midnight has been rewound hundreds of times. I went to see Fantomas last week and I have to admit after seeing them live all other music does seem a little pale. But I like tomahawk and I hope they continue on for a long time 'cause I really need to see them live.

I finally have this album! I like it a lot (more than the first one), but I can't say I love it. While it's nice to have a little experimentation in a rock album, I don't find "Harlem Clowns" listenable at all and "Desastre Natural" bores me. I give it a 4/5 overall though, because nine strong tracks out of eleven isn't too bad.
And for the commenters, the album really shouldn't be compared to Mr. Bungle or Faith No More, since this is Duane Denison's project, and it sounds like you'd expect a Duane Denison project to sound like - the Jesus Lizard, but heavier and with more polished production.

I've got this on my computer and I'm looking foward to hearing it. I'm digging Patton a lot at the moment.

I love this album. One of my favourites. It may not be super underground or non-accesible but it's great. The album really peaks at Capt. Midnight, and the rest to follow is still good, but not so memorable.
If they replaced Desastre Natural with a hard rocker, I think this album would be better. Nonetheless, I love it. Tomahawk are still my favourite Patton-related project.
4.6/5 from me.

Disastre Natural was written by Denison with Patton in mind....I think it's one of the best tracks on that album. I wouldn't enjoy the album as much if it just had heavier Jesus Lizardesque songs on it.
The first album was great because it was pretty diverse for a hardrock album. I still think FNM kills Tomahawk in the versatility department.
This album disappointed me to no end. I give it a 2/5 (it gets higher than a 1 because Desastre Natural is a good song; the rest is all forgettable at best). If you are a fan of other Patton work, I don't advise running out to buy this unless you have a wad of cash you want to throw away.
are there actually any albums that you DO like?
as for the album, there are some highpoints, that beat the self titled, but i think if you are after a good Tomahawk album, get the self titled. this album careers off of their usual sound on some of the songs, and i'm not to keen on the last 2 tracks.
it's a good album, but i prefer the s/t whole heartedly.
3.8/5

I've been listening to it. I just love every single band that Mike Patton has ever been in. He's a genius.

listen zappa, this IS a good album, if not exceptional in my opinion. how can you stereotype all young kids as being into linkin park and therefore ?belittelin? there musical taste? I am fifteen and mr bungle r my favourite band. To say fantomas are better than this is ridiculous, you must be way up yourself. Tehy have only one album of propa songs n it aint as good as this. I have seen them live (fantomas) once and granted if was a lot better but only coz they didnt play the random noises and stuff and concentrated on the real songs, the omen, spiderbaby, etc.
Also i saw the fantomas melvins big band at the london forum and once again there was not too much random noise mainly the actual songs. Does this tell you somethng mate?

Mit Gas is to this day still my favorite Patton work but maybe thats just me. i think you understated the closing track a bit since i find no "country-ish" aspect throughout the entirety of the song and it serves as a triumphantly loud and experimental closing to a masterpiece.

Capt. Midnight is like a Deftones song, but I think the heavy part in it blows my mind even more than some of Deftones' stuff. It's really good.

Loved your first paragraph, very much. What you said about FNM is very true. They sound like a different band each album, and boy do I love them for it.
