QOTSA are back again with thier first album since 2002's breakthrough Songs For The Deaf. This album comes nowhere near to matching Songs For The Deaf. But after listening to the first seven tracks, you think it might. Medication and Everybody Knows That You're Insane bring riffage, noise and distortion that gets you ready for the ride, with Everybody Knows being the slightly better of the two. Then in a sudden shift, Queens of the Stone Age drops Tangled up in Plaid, a song about suicide. The first three minutes build intensity up into the final minute of calculated prog-rock, a great song and a highlight. Then comes the killer three song chunk of Burn The Witch, In My Head, and Little Sister, three of the four singles off the album. Little Sister was even nominated for a hard rock grammy. Burn the Witch is the best song on this CD. It has a steady driving two-chord guitar, that remains present throughout the song. In this song, the verses far outshine the chorus. In My Head meanders along for four minutes, with none of the purpose and drive of Tangled Up In Plaid and Burn The Witch. It is insanely catchy though. Little Sister falls of from the three preceding tracks a bit, the last minute doesn't have much substance, it seems like a one and a half minute song. I Never Came has a good drum opening, and the song is pretty good. Really soft. Someone's in the Wolf is a monstrous and epic song. The lyrics are really good, but the song is so distorted you can barely hear them. I had to look them up. This Blood is Love is kind of boring, it's too long and soft. Skin on Skin is a distorted mess, probably the second worst song. By now, the album is spiralling out of control, but the fourth single, Broken Box liftes it back up. It is a light, bouncy and entertaining song, very likeable. Then the album crashes and burns from there. Killer Scene is absolutely terrible, I hate this song. It is just talking throughout, and is the album's worst. I don't know how it is possible to like it. Long Slow Goodbye is pretty good, but as you probably guessed from the title, very slow. Not a special song. Overall, a good two thirds of an album from QOTSA. Nice to have some new material from them.

An alright album, but "Skin on Skin" and "Someone's in the Wolf" just piss me off every time I listen to them because they're so repetitive, and just sound awful from the start anyways. Kindof ruins my enjoyment of this album..ALOT

The song "in my head" is definitely about a girl that he can't stop thinking about. The idiot who wrote the long ass review just insulting the album is an idiot who is probably so use to the shit that is on the radio now that is so watered down to suit the needs of the public that he has lost sight (if he ever even had it) of what music is about. It is about experimenting and expressing real feelings, or to set an atmosphere that is desired, FAG. My personal favorite on this album is "Into the plaid." It rocks and my drummer and I love to cover it. This album has a beautiful ambiance.

i noticed that no one hear has mentioned how "this lulliby" is meant to be a guitar rendition of beethoven's moonlight sonata. honestly, does no one listen to classical music anymore?

I always take albums in steps. The first seven tracks up to and including Little Sister are amazing. If the second half is the same as the first this will truly be an amazing achievment.

I really enjoy this album, but I think it toned down a bit on the heavy side. I mean, the songs are great, but Nick nor Dave are included in this album. "Tangled Up In Plaid," "Burn the Witch," "Skin on Skin," "The Blood is Love," and "Someone's in the Wolf" are the best songs on the album. Seriously though, bring Nick back at least.

This album starts so damn strong. It trails off a bit towards the end though which is really unfortunate but because the first 7 or so songs are so strong, It doesn't really matter.

This album is so under-rated along with the first album. I Never Came is in my opinion QOTSA's best song. I think it sounds a lot different from everything else and that is why I love it. Please tell me what generic rock you are listening to, because I want to hear it. I think that this is there best album, Rated R might be a little better. But I really don't under tand what everyone loves about SFTD if it weren't for Dave Grohl the album wouldn't be good at all. Besides a few really great songs it just seems like a lot of filler to me.

SFTD is amazing, although I agree this is incredibly under rated, in fact I was blasting this earlier today. Killer scene is incredible, so much character to that song.
