This album is pretty good. Opeth gets really old after a while though.

This album is growing on me, but it's still not my fave Opeth release.

This is everything I love about Opeth. Definitely a near-flawless album. Mikael's growls are probably at his best here. The only album that could maybe top them are the ones in Ghost Reveries.

Still Life rules much harder than this imo. Godhead's Lament and Serenity Painted Death and the rest of the songs own this. That record has more flow.
This is good, and I like the title track, but it's not like Still Life which just warps me into another dimension.

My thoughts precisely!

I'm going to listen to this before bed perhaps. Although I might listen to Devil Sold His Soul instead. Ahh well.

Very nice review, but I'm going to have to disagree on many levels. Each song on here stands beautifully on its own, and the album comes together quite nicely. I think that some of Opeth's best work is on here. It's full of surprises (see Master's Apprentices), which in my eyes, is one of Opeth's finest qualities.
Also, the double bass sounds FUCKING KILLER on this record. It's not overused, but when it is used it shines!
I really think this is their most underrated album.

The vocals annoy me a little on this, they sound gargly.

I think this may be their weakest album, barring damnation. Either this or Orchid. Some parts of it just drag on, and A Fair Judgement is Opeth's worst song over 10 mins imo.
Master's Apprentices is my favorite, and it ironically may be the most repetetive on the album.

Alot of people say this is their weakest album, yet it contains one of their most popular songs in their live sets, Deliverance, and many other amazing tunes such as Wreath and A Fair Judgement.

What I like about the this album apart from the clean and melodic, is the tone on the overall heavy side. I think it's the harsh vocals and best example is 'Wreath' with very disturbing layers of higher pitched death vocals. I think it's some of Ã…kerfeldt's best. Not to mention the first few minutes of 'By the Pain I See in Others'; sick
I've probably mentioned it before but 'Master's Apprentices' is one amazing build-up with the best of this album's qualities. The ending in particular including the solo is probably the highlight on this album for me.
Btw instead of arguing whats better/worse, just enjoy the fucking music people. :chug:
