Well The Division Bell wasn't a bad album in itself. Neither was A Momentary Lapse Of Reason.

They just didn't live up to Pink Floyd's reputation, that's all. If they'd been released under a different band name (and due to Waters' departure, they probably should've been), they'd be much more highly thought of.

Devision Bell wasn't a bad album. But I wouldn't give it 5 on 5 I should have specified. Floyd from `71 to `79 .

Meh Piper At The Gates Of Dawn is still my favorite "Pink Floyd" CD, but it's not really "Pink Floyd" as we know them.

Pink Floyd
Animals

I'll never forget the first time I heard this one. My dad walked into my room and handed me an old, warped, dirty, worn out tape and said, "this has always been one of my favorites, check it out." Why not? I put it into the tape deck and fell in love. This was one of the first albums I truly just loved to listen to, and still is.

Animals was recorded during 1977 at Britannia Row Studios, in London. The ablum is based on George Orwell's, Animal Farm and is a statement about the pitfalls of capitalism. As far back as I can remember it was always somewhat overshadowed by Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall. It wasn't really recognized by the general public for the great work it was at the time of its release, but as of the last couple of years, however, it has become much more popular and is now regarded as one of Pink Floyds best works.

Now, to the tracks...

1. Pigs on the Wing (Part 1):
The album opens up with the wonderfully simplistic acoustic piece, Pigs on the Wing. While the song is barely a minute, I couldn't think of a better way to start the album. It provides a nice and airy intro that just gets you ready to sit and flow with the music. Another thing I like about this track is the nice contrast between some of Floyd's earlier (and later) super complex effect drenched songs. 4/5

2. Dogs:
Dogs is, well, epic. Clocking in at around 17 minutes this one might be a bit intimidating to some, but I never find myself saying, "When's it gonna end?". Roger Waters' lyrics are top notch here. His metaphoric comparisons to greedy businessman and dogs are outstanding. David Gilmoure's guitar work is also top shelf here with guitar solos and fills all over the place. Richard Wright too shines with great keys through out. Mason, however, doesn't have any stand outs here, the song doesn't call for it. Everything fits together perfect. 4.5/5

3. Pigs (Three Different Ones):
Easily my favorite song on the album. The guitars really stand out here as do the lyrics. It's much more energetic and "in your face" than any of the other tracks on the album. Waters' lyrics deal with the fat, hypocritic "pigs", another great metaphor. The guitars are loud and raunchy here, gotta love 'em. The drums are better here with a nice beat throughout this almost slow song. 5/5

4. Sheep:
This one is more synth driven, but still rocks hard. Wright really shines here with the mostly keyboard middle section. The lyrics on this one are also quite interesting and executed amazingly with some sort of synth effect done to Waters' voice that makes it break up (can't remember what it's called). Gilmoure takes more of a backseat on this one. Still a great song. 4/5

5. Pigs on the Wing (Part 2):
Pretty much identical to the first, and equally as fitting. The album is book ended in usual Floyd style. Great work.... 4/5

FINAL SUMMATION:
A great Pink Floyd album, but hard for some to get into as the songs are very long. Might not want to start here if you're new to Floyd since it doesn't have any of their hits or well known jams, but defiantly a must have if you are a fan of Pink Floyd and enjoy their experimental style.

I'm not heavily into Pink Floyd, but this is definitely my favourite album of theirs. "Pigs (Three Different Ones)" is a really good song, and the politicalness of it makes it cooler.

Great review Big Tube. One of my favorites. My story is similar to yours, I got in to this album (and Floyd in general) through my Dads old records.

Dogs is one of the greatest songs. Ever. The lead work in that is beyond genius.

5/5...second-best Pink Floyd album after WYWH. Or maybe it's better than WYWH. They're one-two at the top. Too bad The Wall and Dark Side are more popular.

Dark Side is only popular because it is thought to be the 1st concept album, when Zappa did it about 5 years before PF did. However, I think the Wall is one of the greatest albums ever, one of my top five favourite albums ever. Only Piper at the Gates of Dawn comes close to it in my opinion. It's just so epic, and grand.

Threadstarter: I didn't mean to be an asshole with my previous comment. Excellent review. Dogs is the greatest Pink Floyd achievment in so many facets, especially the lead work. 4.5/5 for me.

Ha... i gave it a 4.5/5 in the other thread (my n00b days). So i'll change my rating from 4/5.
