There has to be one. The eternal cosmic order of cultural preference is nothing to be sad about.

I meant it is sad for him! Not for us of course. But I wish good Portishead vibes on everyone!

By that logic he should be sad for me because I don't hear why OK Go is good band.

Doesn't feel worth it.

nah, this is better than s/t. they took huge risks with this, it was a defining moment in their career.

s/t was safe. solid album but it added nothing to their legacy that wasn't already there.

from a creative standpoint alone this is by far the more impressive/remarkable/original record

it's a oddity for sure so with that comes a complimentary dose of divisiveness

yeah, always struggled with how to rate it. one of the many things I love about Portishead is their interesting approach to sampling, and on Third they expand upon the 'sick band jammed into and chopped up by a sampler/computer' thing, resulting in this magnificent beast of an album that fully realizes the band's potential, shattering expectations and leaving an inimitable legacy

but I also find it difficult to sit through the album, as good as the music on it is. it's too experimental, or something, and my patience with it runs very short of its tracklist. I rarely feel so uniquely torn between the success/cultural relevance of an album and my personal listening feelings as I do with this album when rating, so I've just avoided rating out of anxiety of not being able to accurately capture how I feel about it lol
