Idk some of those late '50s/early '60s sessions that were released years after the fact can get a bit stale, but even then they're still nice listens

"When you're talking about a singular genius such as John Coltrane, everything he's done cannot be considered any less than fantastic."
Ehhhhhhhhhhhh...

Fuck it, I'm starting from the beginning. Some Count Basie or Duke Ellington or something.

I feel like I'm listening to the soundtrack of a really old silent movie.

If we're talking getting into Coltrane, I'd say Live at Birdland is a fantastic accessible entry point as well. Tho A Love Supreme was the first jazz record I ever loved.
I think Meditations & Ascension are his best and barely listen to Giant Steps & Blue Trane, but their grandeur in technicality are so different.

Yeah A Love Supreme was my way into Coltrane too. Great album.

I was a little saturated with jamming this year's albums so decided to go back in time and jam this one. It was good, refreshing. "Countdown" is absolutely insane (that drum tempo) and "Naima" is beyond beautiful.
The man can't do wrong.

I gotta say Spiral is my jam on this. The textures laid by piano and bass here (drums for me are in the background a bit) are quite prominent compared to the other tunes on here and the way that John plays around and (seemingly) against them is sooo amazing...

God damn, Mr. P.C. is like clapping in a baby's face right after Naima's lullaby.
In, uh, in a good way. Galvanizing

Yippee, definitely more Coltrane will be happening today for me too.
porc, do you know the the Live in Paris 1972 albums from Bill Evans? They are so wonderful oh my goodness.

I haven't jammed them! I'm more behind than I like on my non-free jazz jazz canon, and double that for live recordings (even though so many times with the freedom of movement in jazz that's where so much of the magic is!!)
I can feel it. This is not simply the week of jazz. Nor, as it happens, the month.
2021 is the gosh darn year of jazz. Turn on my showerhead? Boop de boopity bop it's piping hot jazz. Didn't shake my shoe out before putting it on? Jazz done made a home in the sole.
"What's cooking on the stove, honey?"
"Some fiery modal jazz, babe, flambé!"
