Heh, thanks, I can see this eventually dipping to a 4.5 though, the first two tracks are a bit below the quality of the rest, unlike Crimson and Back to Times of Splendor which can blow me away with every minute.

Still though, listened to it about ten times while writing the review and it didn't wear off on me a bit there, so who knows!

Wyrd is great. You should check out the Vargtimmen records, they're a couple of my favorite albums ever. This is pretty awesome too, I haven't listened to it as much as the others though.

It's made doubly impressive by the fact that it's a one-man band (or was, rather; apparently he at least had a separate drummer on this album).

Wow, didn't know that! I'll need to check out their earlier stuff too, do they sound like this?

The older albums sound pretty similar to this. The first two tracks (your least favorite, coincidentally) are the biggest deviation from the Wyrd standard. Lots of epic, epic black/doom metal with a ton of atmosphere and variety. Great stuff.

Like I said, my favorites are Vargtimmen pt. I and pt. II, followed closely by The Ghost Album.

edit: The Wyrd MySpace isn't that bad, it has some of the older songs up too: Linky. This Message Edited On 01.28.08

Awesome, I must check them out then, and you're right about the two opening songs being my least favourite but 'Cold in the Earth' has grown on me significantly.

@Josh, heh, yeah, I don't usually do that, but still, I think it's quite important in describing how the album can make you feel, the pure power in the atmosphere, you'd know what I was talking about if you heard it!

Glad you like it jrowa, I have a hard time putting it into a genre too! I have it labelled as black metal on wmp, but that's pretty far from the truth. This Message Edited On 01.29.08

woot! I love it when I can get people into the music I love, this is seriously the best album I have heard this decade (along with Back to Times of Splendor by Disillusion)

Just had 'The Ghost Album' delivered, and it's f'ing awesome, not quite sure if it is as good as this, but it's pretty epic. I might review it sometime next week.

Man, this guy is a god.

Three posts in a row for me...

Had to lower my rating after listening to The Ghost Album and Heathen, both of which are as good as (if not better!) than this album, and I can hardly rate them all 5's, simply put, this band is one of my favourite ever, and they're f'in consistent too.

I finally got this, and so far the first track absolutely rules.

First track is easily the worst, easily, album only really gets going by the third track.

Is this a good place to start with Wyrd? It seems their whole catalog is pretty tight, but I always personally like to see/hear where a band is at most recently first.

Well, seeing as you've already got this, my answer is pretty void, but anyways.

I wouldn't say there is a good place to start with Wyrd really, as each album sounds quite a bit different, Vargtimmen I is pretty much straight up black metal with some acoustic and folkish touches, part 2 is a lot more funeral doom, though still had a couple of black metal songs, The Ghost Album is melo-death and this is folk/death doom.

I can't wait for the guy's next album.

The Ghost album sounds like something I would like to.

Yeah, sorry, lol, I picked this up anyway, really enjoyed it, none of the tracks blew me away, but they were all solid, not a single weak spot on the album.

I thought so the first time to, and I know you've probably heard this excuse before (actually, you definitely have) but honestly, these songs are much better in the context of the album on the whole, rather than individually or in sections.
