So, we agree ;) If you're really trying to hear their doom past than you need to get Serenades (I love that album, though).

I disagree with the_wizard, the best songs on the album are A Dying Wish and The Silent Enigma.
This is, hands down, my favorite doom metal album of all time. It's a flawless masterpiece, one I had to listen to many times to really grasp it all.

Wizard, my personal opinion is don't take too much stock in his opinion of this album. His opinion is his opinion, but I can't see
how he'd think this is a flawless doom album if he had heard what else is out there.

Well, it's not like I have much to compare this against in terms of the genre. However, I generally judge albums based on how it holds up on it's own, how well it flows as a whole, unique? etc., not so much against how well they sound to everything else in the genre (to me, that's just a typical way of stating an opinion). For example, as I've heard billions of times around here: "Oh my God, this is like so much better than everything else in the doom genre".

I try to judge music on its own merit, but you can't help comparing a little bit. If you eat a chuck steak and think it's phemonenal because you've never had steak before, and then you get some sort of strip or something, it's going to be hard to not compare that first steak to this one. I know, random comparison, but I'm just saying... ;)

Good comparison actually.
I will be looking more into Anathema's old stuff simply because this has some damn good stuff on it.

Just keep in mind that their other doom albums have an entirely different vocalist on them.

ha ha, only at the death vocals. His clean vocals on Pentecost III aren't anything special at all. It's a lot of the reason that album isn't all that good.

This is probably my favourite Anathema album. The atmosphere is wonderful, and A Dying Wish is easily one of the best songs ever. This is the very definition of the doom metal sound. It takes some time to get into, however.

Ha ha, there's the problem. San Diego gets fog in the mornings sometimes but it's gone long before I wake up and bust out an Anathema CD.
