It's not that I might be doing that, I am doing that.

How I typically go:
1 - I suffered while hearing this a lot
1.5 - really bad
2 - kinda bad
2.5 - average
3 - just good enough to not be average
3.5 - good
4 - really good
4.5 - amazing, but not the best
5 - the best of the best

Mmmmmmmmm... How I usually rate things is not very different I think, it's generally something like this:
5.0 - Perfection, should go down in history
4.5 - Almost perfect, should go down in history
4.0 - Amazing, small flaws, should go down in history
3.5 - The best of the best of music as entertainment, or music with a more artistic purpose that has some flaws
3.0 - Fun stuff, good entertainment, noticeably flawed art but still good for the most part
2.5 - Mediocre, mix of bad and good or just very in the middle
2.0 - Mostly bad but nothing awful, may still have a few acceptable things
1.5 - Borderline awful, but may still have something of value
1.0 - Awful, most likely there's nothing of value here
0.5 (not here but RYM exists so I count it) - I would be surprised if there's more than 5 seconds that aren't terrible
Also, if an album fucks up a lot some moment, like with Beefheart's '81' Poop Hatch Ice Cream for Crow, my rating for that album is going to sink.

" The best of the best of music as entertainment"
Everything that falls under this should be at least a 4.5

Not for me. And looking at my ratings, maybe I actually give the best of entertainment only a 3.0, and I'm okay with that, most of the time I don't fine entertainment very, well, entertaining anyway.

Music as entertainment can be a classic as well and deserves the same respect as the more "artsy" stuff as long as it is well made

I value art more than almost everything else in this world. That's all.

Entertainment is a function of art

I don't care if art is entertaining or not, it doesn't have to be. It means nothing to me. Art can be entertaining in the same way someone who likes math finds complex equations entertaining, but that's about it.

Artsy music for the purpose of being artsy without any entertainment value is usually very bad and annoying to me

You need to do some serious self-reflection, young man.
And liking japanese things does not make you above entertainment.

This is just as confusing to me as what alex said. What the hell is music as entertainment value? There are very few musicians who try to make something unenjoyable. Actually, from the top of my head, music for aiports is the most direct album that trys to create a different listening reaction/enjoyment value. And that is beloved by many.

I think what MrSirLordGentleman meant is that music going for purely entertainment value (not being artsy at all) is not necessarily a bad thing, it can be very perfect too.
So 'entertainment' doesn't equal bad.

I dont really know what artsy means. And I presume what you think is artsy is different to what mrsirlord thinks. Isnt Arianna Grande artsy for going further than most industry bound pop musicians go? Or is artsy just about innovation? Does is have to be "intellectual" like Cage or the dadaistic punk rock of the 70s?
This all just sounds like classic high brow, low brow art criticism to me. Which often leads nowhere.
