It’s clear that The Dillinger Escape Plan is finished with daring its mathcore-obsessed detractors to accept their increasingly eclectic musical direction. By now, you’re either with them or you’re not. Those who continue to cry, ”sellout!” can go listen to Psyopus wank away. The rest of us will continue to drink in the boldest, most thrilling album of this supremely talented band’s career.
oh.

as much as i hate to admit it, i totally agree with everything in that Popmatters excerpt youve quoted, Neoteric.

and as much as i do like a bit of jazz-influenced spazz-out metal, i actually prefer the more melodic tracks on IW.

Other than the "when Acting As A...." parts and the overuse of the glitch-thing, I thought the songs were decent. One thing tho, can anyone actually distinguish between Dimitri and Greg in "Fix Your Face"? Because I cannot.

Yeah, I think Greg is sounding a little similar to Dimitri at times, as well. He still sucks though...

do you mean greg sucks on ire works, or in general?

in either case, why? i admit that a lot of the time his lyrics are pretty bad, and he can come across as conceited. but i think his style is much better for dillinger than dimitri.

Greg would be more tolerable if he'd stop singing from his nose and if his vocals were lower in the mix. By all accounts, Dmitri is/was a terrible vocalist. But his throat-shredding vocals were mixed in such a way that they just added to the chaos. Greg's vocals tend to overtake it.

yeah, i know what you mean about dimitri, like because he was pushing his voice so hard it totally matched the feeling on Calc Infinity that everyone was going at it as hard and fast as they could. whilst, as i've said before, that album is obviously a work of intricate technical genius, i also get the feeling that in parts the dudes just wanted to see how far they could go and how high they could keep their standards without exhausting themselves: if you try and play along you'll know it's as much about endurance as it is about technical skill.

however, on Miss Machine, Greg came in with this like mega beefed presence and voice and it matched the music. instead of being like this all-out assault, the music is much more confident and powerful, the dynamics and heavier sound give it a much more intimidating feel. Greg might be arrogant (and this does indeed show in his prominence in the mix) but he just makes dillinger into an actually frightening band rather than just an angry one.

In general. He really doesnt have a good singing voice, and his scream isnt all that great either. I think they just picked him up because he could, half ass, do Dimitri and Patton's styles. They wanted to be able to play old stuff and Irony. I really think they could have done way better in choosing vocalist. Everyone is different, I know, but Greg just annoys the piss out of me.

Very true.

this album is pretty good, the experimentation sounds excellent, it's a pretty interesting album actually, I think it's just that you have to get into it, trust me

You wouldn't of thought anyone could really review this better than just "good" but Absolute Punk went ahead and nailed that shit with a 92%.

This review is actually the only negative one I've seen but also probably the most accurate -- if a little harsh on the rating.

I don't.

I also don't think Dmitri was a bad vocalist by any means.

He's pretty monotonous. No really range aside from going to spoken word right back to full on yelling. I still like him better than ol' Gregory.

Looksl like this board is dominated by Coheed fans and bandwagon junkies. This album really ain't that bad.

It's not really 4.5 material, either.

Maybe everyone just expects much more from DEP.
